The Marine Drive extension project from Wellawatte to Dehiwala is nearing completion and it will be open for traffic later this year, Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando said yesterday.
“The construction of the two sections from Kollupitiya to Steuart Place Wellawatte and to Dehiwala has reached their final stages,” the Minister said. Addressing a progressive review meeting on Monday with engineers and the Project Director at the ministry auditorium, the minister said that Rs. 220 million has been spent on the 600 metre section of the four-lane road from Kollupitiya to Steuart Place and Rs. 420 million on the 1.2 km section of the four-lane road from Wellawatte to Dehiwala
Railway Station.“the entire stretch covers 7.8 km from Steuart Place to Dehiwala via Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya and Mount Lavinia. Mudilla plants have been planted on both sides of the marine drive with the assistance of the NDB Bank. Infrastructure development including the construction of pavements on both sides of the road, road signs, drainage system, parking facilities and replacement of street lights have also been completed,“the Minister said.
