Kelani Valley trains delayed due to sheer negligence of Train guard, driver

Driver said no one woke him up from sleep!

As the locomotive operator was not woken up by anyone from deep slumber, many trains on the Kelani Valley (KV) Railway line have been delayed this morning, Railway sources said.

They said the train was about to leave the Waga Railway station to Fort at 6.20 am, eventually left at 7.06 am after a delay of 46 minutes.

"Train No. 9261 was the first train on line in the evening yesterday on the KV line, began its journey from Fort Railway Station at 4.00 pm and reached Waga at 5.45 pm. The same train guard and the driver were entrusted to take the train Fort on the following day at 6.20 am," they said.

They had more than 12 hours to rest overnight before operating the locomotive on the KV line this morning. The train guard and driver had spent time in their rest rooms provided by the department during duty, the official said.

However, in spite of having spent the night and time they had to rest, the train, which was scheduled to start at 6.20 am from Waga railway station, started its journey after a delay of 46 minutes.

The locomotive driver said the train was delayed as there was no one to wake them up. As a result, many trains were delayed on the KV line today.

The Railway Department is to conduct internal investigations in to this sheet negligence by the driver. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
