A heated argument over the conduct of MP Janaka Tissakuttiarachchi brought ruling and opposition MPs close to exchanging blows today.
The argument flared up when Tissakuttiarachchi refused to tender an apology to MP Rohini Kaviratne whom he had insulted using abusive words.
Tissakuttuarachchi was making a fiery speech when MPs Hesha Withnage and Chaminda Wijesiri tried to storm in towards the former. A few MPs from the ruling party benches including Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando, Indika Anuruddha and Kanchana Wijesekera were there at that time.
Serjeant-at-arms Narednera Fernando and Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa also ran on to the well of the House and tried to restore calm. The MPs were pushing each other physically at the well and filthy words filled the air. Mr. Fernando lost his balance and almost hit the floor during the melee.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

The standard of the country's law makers and the prevailing standard of the execution of the law can be judged by the behaviour of these hooligans in the parliament since of late. Good advertisement for boosting of tourism in the years to come if our so called parliamentarians act in this manner setting an good example to the citizens of the isle.

Is there footage available? A comedyshow here on television shows fights in parliaments: Ukrain, Turkey, Hongkong, Taiwan, Bolivia....... That one in Sri Lanka in 2018 was a funny one too.

Reply to Samarasinghe: in the British parliament they discuss and debate with words and not physically like monkeys. Big difference!

Unfortunate that the people have elected unsuitable people to represent them. Educated are not a lot different.

New constitution should include a clause preventing abusive language being used in parliament. Speaker should have powers to suspend such a parliamentarian for six months minus all his emoluments.
