The third Coal power plant in Nuraichcholai has been shut down due to a technical fault and as a result, power cuts may have to be extended, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) said.
They said the exact hours of power cut will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has informed him that Unit 3 of the Norochcholai power plant has been shut down due to a steam leak.
He said the maintenance work is estimated to take 3-5 days. Fuel power plants will be utilized to manage the power generation until the repair work is completed. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Even if there is power for 24 hrs a day...the donkeys in this country will smile and wave .... It's fine...

What will we get for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all weather power generation for the coming times? It is these coal power stations, or fuel power stations. All of India and Japan proposed investment in renewable, such as solar will only work certain hours of the day, and only when the weather is favourable. Major overseas countries are all looking for alternative to renewable power generation as it is too unreliable in the long run.

Please ensure that these break -downs, shut downs and technical faults etc reported periodically are genuine and not manipulated to provide 0pportunities for purchase from Private Power Plants.

Everything happens due to the lackadaisical and poor management of the CEB. All officers including minor staff members of the CEB often enjoy their privileges like overtime and subsistence. Thus in case of emergency break down the CEB maintenance crew members take hours and hours to attend and repair it targeting the overtime and other perks. Besides the money being earned by the CEB is not enough to maintain its employees. Further 2/3 of the employees are recruited to the CEB over political influence. Therefore the entire CEB should be subjected to a restructure in order to obtain a better service
