Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said freedom is not something that ends with the victory and it is something that should be won day by day.

"Freedom is not something that ends with the victory. It is something that should be won day by day, and it is this fact that we must highlight on each Independence Day. However, I firmly believe that a nation inspired by hundreds of years of relentless struggle for freedom, is fully capable of remaining undaunted and facing up to this challenge as well. As a nation accustomed to unceasingly fighting for independence, on this Independence Day, let us resolve to overcome these challenges as well," he said.

In his message for the 74th Independence Day, the Primier said "This year, we celebrate Sri Lanka’s 74th Independence Day amidst many great challenges. The challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has plagued the world for two years, are not insignificant,

Whilst historically, the people of this country had lost their freedom due to foreign invasions and separatist terrorism, today we have lost our freedoms due to the Covid pandemic which deprived us of the opportunity to develop the country for two years. The economy, education and livelihoods were completely overturned. However, as a nation that has sacrificed for freedom, we cannot allow this frustration to overcome us,

Although the world faced massive setbacks, we have also used all the positive steps taken globally to recover from the pandemic. We have already taken steps necessary to provide the population with all three vaccinations as a solution to the pandemic. It is this approach that has enabled us to recover from the pandemic to a great extent and return public life to a sense of normalcy," he said in his message.

Yes it is correct. But we are day by day losing our freedom through various means - family members settling down in far away lands, hectic life style where children are no longer caring to aged parents as before, regional powers taking control slowly of our resources, cost of living increasing more than income growth, rapid urbanisation giving us less air and privacy.

Visiting my family in-law in Sri Lanka it broke my heart to see the rich got much more rich and the poor are much more poor. The differences in Sri Lanka are tremendous. Very easy for the PM to talk about freedom, when he doesn't have to struggle to survive every day. How can Buddhist rich people live with themselves, partying, drive in big luxury cars. How can monks with filled bellies except alms from starving people?

In Sri Lanka freedom and riches are only for politicians and a hand full of henchman.

True but this saying should come from your heart but not from your lips.

But we have lost the freedom to have three proper meals a day.

Freedom is not something that ends with the victory- Yes that is why you started/allowed mega corruption and white elephant projects leading to SL begging from everyone. This begging and dire state will result in getting what LTTE could not get from war. You are a traitor
