The Presidential Task Force in charge of Economic Revival and Poverty Eradication decided yesterday that stringent measures should be in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 beyond the Western Province, a minister said yesterday.
The task force headed by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa called for a meeting with the Ministers and MPs representing the three districts of the Western Province. Besides, the Divisional Secretaries, District Secretaries, the local authorities’ Chairmen, the Police officers and other officials attended the meeting.
State Minister Nimal Lansa who attended the meeting told Daily Mirror, the need for the prevention of the spread of the disease beyond the Province was highlighted. He said the task force decided to proceed with economic activities at the same time.
Fishermen will be encouraged to carry out fishing. The State Minister said the Fisheries Corporation would purchase their catch to be distributed throughout the country.
“We received a complaint today that there is no trader to purchase fish to be sold locally. Fish stocks meant for the export market and manufacturing dry fish are sold. However, fishermen are unable to sell off their stocks to the local retail market. The Fisheries Corporation will come out with a programme to address it,”
he said.
Besides, he said the previous home delivery system of distributing essentials would be re-introduced.
