Shortly after President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s announcement regarding the increase in daily wages of plantation workers to Rs.1700, effective from yesterday, the Planters’ Association of Sri Lanka has raised concerns, stating that implementing this increase is not feasible.
A gazette notification was also issued announcing the increment yesterday itself.
A senior official from the association revealed that the decision was made without consulting tea plantation companies, leading them to take legal action to challenge the gazette.
A meeting is scheduled in Colombo today to further discuss the matter with company officials before proceeding with legal steps.
