Wine stores in the country should be open at least from 10 am to 10 pm so as to increase the excise levy, Parliamentarian Diana Gamage said today.

She told Parliament that some billions of rupees of excise levy was lost as the wine stores are closing at 9 pm.

The MP said even though the government impose excise duty, no method was in place to collect this duty.

“We impose excise duty but no method is in place to collect the duty. We can collect excise duty only if we sell alcoholic products. Wine stores and restaurants should be kept open at least from 10 am to 10 pm. We lose billions of excise tax just because wine stores are closing at 9 pm,” she said.

Gamage said even if wine stores were closed at 9 pm, people who wanted to purchase liquor know how and where they can buy them after 9 pm. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

You can earn billions and billions by keeping the liquor shops opens throughout the day and save similar amounts by doing away with free education in the universities and health sectors. Can you tell us from where people get souch money to spend on liquor when there are reports saying three meals a day is a luxury for many people in the country.

It's not all about money as this parliamentarian espouses. One day she calls for marijuana and now liquor based revenues. Doesn't she realise that so many families are being destroyed in the process. Some politicians many stand to benefit as they are heavily invested in the industry.

The people are more organised than the parliamentarians. If the liquor shops close at 9.00pm the people know how to buy on time. Opening till 10.00pm is not going to increase sales. Apart from everything the prices are rocket high and that is why the sales are down.

Though your idea has some economic sense, first profit margin must be reduced for production of alcohol and the living standard of the people must improve so they have a disposable income .Currently everyone is struggling to put food on the table.Work on how people involved in the industry can purchase raw materials.Walking the talk is important.

People can't afford to buy liquor due to Ridiculously high price taxing majority poor to make revenue is bad news even devop nations close wine stores at 9pm due to public safety Road safety etc...if you seriously reduce the price accordingly With information cost of living you probly get the results you need food and beverage alcohol non alcohol products runs on turnover make less margins massive turnover everyone wins..
