Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa today said he would give up politics if undue influence is inflicted on Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs to join a multi-party government.

Mr. Premadasa made this remark while speaking to journalists after visiting trade unionist Joseph Stalin in police custody.

"The government is currently hunting down trade unionists and others who are engaged in protests. They send messages to our MPs influencing them to join a multi-party government. I will have to quit politics if such nagging continues," Mr. Premadasa said.

"I would like to question as to how the father of all recent violent activities, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is freely moving about while protesters such as Joseph Stalin who fought for democracy is behind bars. Also we recall what the incumbent President said while he was an opposition MP. He said Sri Lanka might lose GSP plus if people like Stalin are arrested. This remark has to be valid to this date. Mr. Wickremesinghe cannot afford to change his stance just because he became the President," he added. (Yohan Perera)

Don't distort facts. The demo this man got arrested last time where RW had made that comment was at the parliament junction, not barred by any court order. You giving up politics because the government is fishing for MPs from your camp is a very weak argument, and on the flip side it shows that you lack leadership, are weak to absorb and counter challenges thrown at you. If you are a true leader, a champion of democracy, then at times like this when democracy is well and truly under threat in our country, irrespective of party affiliations, you should have the ability to muster up courage and support of others to stage large scale peaceful demonstrations capturing the attention of the international media to pressure the current so-called President Dictator to put an end to all the suppression.

If we can lose GSP plus while arresting stallin, it is good to do that. Mind it, GSP plus is no more an income earning source, given other digital sectors, a booming business. Europe itself, claiming the option was a valuable one. There are many more countries having a system that prove many more facilities to boost our economy.
