Total damages to Galle Face by Aragalaya estimated at nearly Rs. 6 million

The total damages caused to Galle Face Colombo by the Aragalaya protests last year have been estimated at Rs. 5.9 million, Parliament was informed today.

According to the answer given by Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva, the damages to park tables and chairs has been estimated at Rs. 1.48 million while the damages to benches are estimated at Rs. 162,000, damages to sinks are Rs 91,000, damages to window panes Rs. 45,000, door locks Rs. 80,000, window locks Rs. 16,000, electric doors Rs. 56,000 and damages to grass is said to be Rs. 1.4 million. The total is said to be Rs 3.3 million while it comes up to Rs 5.9 million when the inflation rate is considered.

Around 55 sets of tables and chairs, 18 benches, one sink, 1450x800mm window glass, ten door locks, 18 window locks, eight electric doors and 14,000 square feet of grass have been destroyed by the Aragalaya protesters according to the Minister.

An inquiry has been conducted by the Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority following a request by the OIC Fort on August 12 last year.

The protestors camped at the Galle Face for days calling the camp sight Gota Go Gama last year.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

But the damage caused to the country by this Minister for asking bribes from a Japanese company and other side deals , will amount to at least Rs 60 billion over few years. So Aragalaya loss is nothing. In fact , Aragalaya forced a weak President to vacate office to prevent further damage to the country. So , basically the return on investment from Aragalaya is far more than the Rs 6 million the Minister mentioned. However the damage that will inflict on the country by current president by selling out the country to India will be irrecoverable. In that case, Aragalaya cost would be Rs 6000 billions.

It is with great astonishment that I am reading the detailed listing of the material damage caused to the country by the Aragalaya protests, around 6 million a year ago! I miss at least a brief comparison, or mention, of the enormous sum that was withdrawn from the country and its people through years of disastrous and corrupt politics! I am not talking about the human and material suffering caused by this policy, which is still going on !!! The overall financial balance of this policy can be calculated fairly accurately from the "incredible" sum of foreign and domestic debt! I only mention this to make the proportionality of the damage and the amount of damage clear! In addition, Aragalay has shaken up Sri Lanka and its politicians and, it is to be hoped, heralded the way to a better future! Unfortunately, the better politicians have not yet been able to speak up enough because transparent tactical electoral maneuvers by the "old ruling guard" have prevented this so far!!!
