Sepal Amarasekara discharged from the case

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis today ordered to release of popular Sri Lankan YouTuber Sepal Amarasinghe from the case filed over a statement he made through a Youtube Channel.

Sepal Amarasinghe was held in remand custody for allegedly making disrespectful comments about the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Deelipa Peiris appearing for the Attorney General informed the court that Senior counsel Darshana Kuruppu had made a lengthy representation stating that his client wishes to tender an apology to the virtual complaints. Having considered this representation, the Attorney General had decided not to proceed with the case against Sepal Amarasinghe.

Meanwhile, Sepal Amarasinghe delivered a public apology not to repeat such offences.  (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

    Apology is acceptable. AG would have agreed to a discharge for inability to frame charges for the alleged offence as per the the available laws

    It’s astonishing how so many people in Sri Lanka support the suppression of free speech. Free speech is about protect the ideas you do not agree with not just for the ideas that you agree with. This is a dangerous slippery slop Sri Lankan democracy is sliding down to.
