The government today approved Sri Lankan migrant workers to import electric vehicles at the cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value of up to 50% of the value of remittances they send to Sri Lanka through official channels from May 2022 to December 2023.

The cabinet approval in this regard has been granted by the decision on August 8, 2022, to provide identified relief with the objective of encouraging the migrant Sri Lankan employees engaged in overseas employment to send remittances through legal means.

The Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry has issued the relevant circular, allowing eligible migrant employees to import a two-wheeled electric vehicle valued up to US$ 25,000 and a four-wheeled fully electric vehicle valued up to US$ 65,000.

Steps have been taken with the objective of further encouraging the foreign exchange earned by emigrant employees to be remitted to Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, having granted the approval to import a two-wheeled electric vehicle with a CIF value of up to 50% of the foreign exchange value is remitted up to either April 30, 2023, or up to the date an application is submitted for the import of a vehicle.

Meanwhile, approval has also been granted to import a four-wheeled electric vehicle with a CIF value of up to 50% of the foreign exchange value remitted from May 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023, to this country. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

The ministry for immigration don't know how to issue PP as soon as possible ...He must know how to issue PP in an efficient manner and open some PP office in many regions in Sri Lanka ...at least in each district and empower the office with some temporary staff for one or two years . How could these people rule a country when they do not know to organise even this small department. They don't know how consider consider this emergency situation..People starving and yet they don't know how to get meet these basic needs. Ranil is not capable of doing any good for this country at all...why can't he see PP department.. No Sri Lankan should suffer to take PP.

Having a PP doesn't get you a great job opportunity. Issuing PP's like handing out mobile SIM cards in every street corner is not going to get people foreign jobs. Need to develop skill set across the board. That's lacking in SL. Skills! If you want SL to be the highest per capita PP holders in the world, I'm sure it could be done.

Problem is people are afraid and can’t trust. After all it will be a car sale racket where the black marketeers will deal with the hard earned overseas worker and create it duty free or create something even worse.

How are they going to charge these electric vehicle when there is constant power shortages and no fuel to run the power plants? California and other western US states are facing this dilemma right now due to the severe drought and major rivers drying up which in turn is affecting hydro power plants. Already they are asking consumers to not charge their electric vehicles at peak times to avoid burdening the grid.

First fix the power points at all locations and then introduce electric vehicles. When there is a power shortages where I'm going charge my electric vehicle? At Presidents house ? Use your brain and cultivate before doing something for the foreign workers. We don't want to bring or import electric vehicles, try to make arrangements how to get a bank loan to build a house with less paperwork.

Don't forget. During floods electric vehicles that get submerged explode. People don't know this. Just do your research.

Note to self : Must remember to get out of electric vehicle if it is being submerged. I guess you mean I can safely sit in a submerging normal vehicle ?

Oh ! my goodness what decisions these politicians are making as the foreign country will not accept our Sri Lanka rupees and whatever earnings the expatriates are having in their foreign currency accounts will be depleted and have an effect on the foreign currencies of the country. At this moment when we do not have a smooth power supply with many outages. Please use your common sense since at this moment the country does not need vehicles as our vehicle population is above the limit and our roadways are not geared to an increase in vehicles.

If you take a look at the pricing there is no benefit, The amount you spend in UAE to purchase a Tesla you can buy some unheard brand in SL ?
