Sri Lanka will miss out on automatic qualification to this year's Cricket World Cup, after losing the third ODI to New Zealand by six wickets.
Sri Lanka's extremely slim chances of clinching the final automatic qualification spot hinged on them beating New Zealand today, South Africa losing both their ODIs to the Netherlands and Bangladesh beating Ireland in one of their three ODIs.
The six-wicket defeat however means the door is now shut on Sri Lanka, and they will need to go through a qualification tournament for the very first time to play in cricket's showpiece event.

With due respect to the Sri Lankan cricketers they tried very hard not to win. Credit must go to the all the boys, coach and support staff... Yes also Mr. Mahela the shadow guru. When teams like Afghanistan, Bangladesh and even Netherlands take big strides in learning and maturing in international cricket, Sri Lankan cricketers seems to find ways to under perform. Over rated, self obsessed, and immatured bunch of cricket playing players are Sri Lankan current team.... PERIOD

After SLC pressure caused Matthews to be included in the team, depriving younger players spots this was bound to happen. The team like SLC is too old and too tired. The glory days of youthful capability is not available, let alone reliably available. New Zealand gave up so many of their players so they could make money for themselves IPL. NZ as a country knows, it is not country that matters to players but their long term future, so it let them seek great money rewards instead of wasting time to play Sri Lanka. NZ of course was confident to whitewash SL anyway.

Sri Lankan batting coach should explain how only Pathum Nissanka can bat on these green wickets in overseas and other's cannot. some of these test playing guys being in New Zealand nearly a month ,still they cannot adapt to the conditions.

Sri Lanka won ODI World Cup in 1996 and T20 World Cup in 2014 and in between used to reach World Cup finals at a regular basis. The standard of cricket started deteriorating after this corrupt and inept group took over SLC. The Minister of Sports must dissolve SLC immediately, revise the Constitution and hold a fair election so that honest persons with knowledge of and love for cricket will be elected as office bearers of SLC.

Even Wwith big consultants like Mahela J., it is only Boru Show and nothing more to expect from the team ? New Teams like Bangladesh and Afghanistan have surpassed us .

Who cares about representing SL in a world cup? All cricketers need to focus on getting an IPL contact. Politicians are a good example, just make as much as you can while you are in the game to hell with the country.
