Some 32 passengers were wounded in a head-on collision involving two buses in Mawanella this morning on the Kandy-Colombo main road, police said.
The mishap took place in the Anwarama area near the Mawanella town where a private bus which was heading towards Pinnawala School and a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus was coming from Kegalle to Kandy crashed against each other.
The injured passengers from both the buses were rushed to the Mawanelle base hospital. Five of the injured passengers were in critical condition. The police said that the bus drivers were also among the injured.
The cause of the accident was reckless overtaking of both buses, it was reported.
Mawanella police are conducting investigations. (T. Shantha Bandara-Mawanella).

Not surprised, driving on the A1 is absolutely crazy, until the authorities decide to get serious about tackling reckless driving more people are bound to suffer like this.

This is a careless driving of this CTB bus driver..How many lives we have lost by think kind of careless over taking ..I think overtaking is one of the major causes of accident in Sri Lanka if only you could controlled it we would have saved many people . Put hefty penalty on all those who overtake. Cancel their licence for 10 years Teach them the risk of overtaking. Put speed limit comeras in each covers

Consequence of Sri Lanka not having an internationally recognised rigorous system of driving tests to qualify for a driver's licence.

Yet another system failure here in this “grand ole’ country.” Either these plonkers are racing each other, sitting on their horns when driving or trying to run on coming traffic; off the roads. Hopping on a bus has become a nightmare. No finesse, nothing smooth and gentle about the ride, hideous music blaring out loud and a totally indisciplined lot running the shit show. Compare this to developed countries and you will see the difference.
