With the price of petrol brought down, it will lead to huge traffic congestion on the roads from tomorrow, Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said.

Addressing the media, he said the present government has not come on the right track. If petrol prices are reduced, people will try to use alternative modes of transportation such as cars and motorcycles again.

Therefore, the roads will be  congested with heavy traffic. This will be a huge issue. During the past few months, the diesel price was reduced but not petrol.

We cannot take any decision on bus fare revision by reducing diesel by Rs. 15. With the traffic congestion, the buses have to burn more diesel from tomorrow and we have to spend more than Rs. 15.

Therefore, we will not take any decision on reducing bus fares," Wijerathne added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Either the Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) should be eliminated or all time RASCAL Gemunu Bugger should be buried alive. Then the country's economy will revive AUTOMATICALLY. Underworld gang should come forward to MURDER this bugger immediately. If not Ranil must act the way he acted on BATALANDA issue.

Such an uneducated fellow! Can't imagine that he even signed papers to buy a bus!

    Nihal Monday, 17 October 2022 09:58 PM

Fuel needs to be priced based on cost. Cannot understand that the LPBOA is on about. They seem to suggest that fuel should be priced high to divert more passengers to their busses. If they improve their service for starters that may happen anyway. With private busses being driven on the roads like maniacs who operate is they are on a perpetual bus race, who would enjoy a bus ride. Teach the drivers and conductors road manners and customer service manners and enforce it and watch the industry transform to a public passenger friendly transport means which will be warmly embraced.

Pure ATTENTION DEFICIENCY DISORDER case. No logic on what he is talking about. Bus fares can't reduce because fuel reduction is marginal. But traffic may increase because of fuel reduction ? Dose he know what is present inflation rate? cost of living? Colombo price index ect.ect?

Gemunu thinks only about his Members' income. If the people can afford to run their cars and move about in comfort why is he against.

Your cursed buses only cause traffic jams and you are unable to have any control over them. Somebody make this fool the transport minister please. DM, please don't give publicity to these IDIOTS.

Remember it is the poor people who uses public transport who are paying such high fares and no control of the prices. Conductors charge what ever price that comes to their mouths. No tickets issues and why do we have to maintain a minister of transport who is sleeping.

LKR 40 reduction translates to weekly reduction in fuel cost per car amounting to LKR 800. Or LKR 3200 per month. Is your alternative transport per person per month, much cheaper and more efficient?

Mr Wijeratne has said something sensible after a long time. Harm is greater than the relief especially to the environment. Mo bikers and tuks are a major cause to the road traffic mainly their unruly manner of riding. What the govt should is keep the fuel prices high and improve the public transport.

Gamunu, you are talking nonsense. Whether it is petrol or diesel, reduction of price in any commodity will be a relief to people.
