Over 4,000 cops in SL are physically unfit: IGP

There are over 4,000 policemen in the Sri Lankan Police who are physically unfit to carry out their duties, IGP Chandana Wickramaratne has revealed.

The IGP revealed this at the consultative committee meeting of the Public Security Ministry today.

Thus, the IGP pointed out that there are about 4,000 policemen who are not at the standard level of health for a long period of time. Therefore the subject minister Tiran Alas has advised the Sri Lanka Police department to prepare the necessary proposal regarding the removal of the policemen who lack the standard level of health for a long period of time and send it to the ministry. Accordingly the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security focused on terminating the service of those policemen who have not fulfilled the required medical standards.

The Members of Parliament who were present said that there are many officers in the police service whose health condition is not sound for a long time and therefore, they do not engage in difficult duties following the submission of medical certificates.

Also, the IGP pointed out that a large number of policemen will retire this year and, hence, there will be vacancies to recruit about 16,000 policemen and women this year.

The committee further focused on the reported incidents of police officers using drugs. Also, the committee focused on the implementation of the law regarding character assassination using the internet.

Also, the current situation of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, the Department of Registration of Persons, the Department of Immigration and Emigration and National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations was also discussed. (Yohan Perera)

What about moral responsibility and duty consciousness..many of them are physically fit but morally corrupted special traffic police .. They take laws on the hand when it comes penalty and they earn a lot in this way ..some take more than what police officers do ..tax them on all these illegal money as well

Almost all senior police officers suffer from obesity, most often caused by alcohol abuse and an unhealthy diet (eating too much and the wrong foods). In most police forces around the world, police officers are required to do weekly exercise, which in Sri Lanka is limited to lifting beer and shot glasses. Getting fat on the job also indicates a weakness of character and sets a bad example for the lower ranks. Since obesity is mostly a self-inflicted disease, these police officers should also be fired.

IG forgot to mention that there are many senior officers who are mentally unfit for the job. When many senior officers go after the Politicians to get their promotions transfers etc. That is a mental condition and they too must be pushed out of the service.

Any Policeman should be tough enough to counter a thug in the street. We see some skinny cops on the road doing traffic duties and also amongst those deployed to tackle the Aragalaya and other protests who make us sigh in disbelief. How did they join the Police Service without the necessary minimum physical qualifications except through the back door with a Politcians' Chit? All bellied cops,particularly of the higher ranks and the skinny ones should be sent home without delay.

I will not blame any policemen in any rank, in this forum. Don't forget, Policemen keep awake, so that you and I - the general public can sleep safely. If the Police do the duty, they are transferred/ interdicted/ dismissed/ or Stranded without promotion. If they do not do it, they are blamed by everyone, including the very criminal who was arrested. This is the norm, not the exception. This pathetic situation came after 1972 political change. Duty conscience officers - Police and others, were branded/insulted/castigated as bureaucrats. Show us a single Policeman from top to bottom who has not suffered! Now, if you are the Policeman asked to carry slippers of a politico's wife, how will you feel?

This is good to eliminate the officers who are doing limited duties on the pretext of health issues and who are using drugs. Make way for new blood in the force. However, there needs to be a standard like access to physical training, dieticians and nutrition advice, annual physical checks and access to mental health counseling as being a cop is extremely stressful work. Even firefighters here in USA have to undergo fitness tests annually where weight and endurance is tested. If they fail they are given time to get back in shape and tested again. If they continue to fail they will be dropped by the department until they are able to meet the standard. Cops have it tougher here and military even more strict.

Even the IGP is not fit for his job. He is licking the shoes of every Ministers so how come he say the cops are unfit. Yes the cops are unfit because they are uneducated studied upto grade 7 0r 8. When the new government is formed IGP should pack his bag and baggage . Very soon this will happen. Even the IGP doesn't know how to speak in English so how can the People respect him.

Who says that the police are unfit for the job ? As far as we know of their fitness levels are limited to extending the hands out and into the pockets, now for that they are fully fit and advance readiness from the high rank to the low rank and down to no rank (tea server must be also compensated on the palm to get the OIC's mobile number) !!
