Responding to a statement made by certain Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs that they were not ready to get COVID vaccine from Army hospitals, Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva stressed that no Sri Lankan would refuse to receive the vaccines from military hospitals whereas only non – nationals could do so.

“We have a humanitarian military unit which is close to the people's hearts. Every Sri Lankan knows how committed the Army is towards the country's development and ensuring the security of its people apart from its prime duty," he underlined.

Army Commander said it was really pathetic to hear such statements being made by Tamil political leaders who represent the Tamil people.

“It is up to them to decide whether to abstain from getting the vaccine from Army hospitals. However, we treat all people alike, disregarding their caste, ethnicity or religious belief. However, we have no issue with their stance. We are giving the vaccine to these public representatives in the hope of protecting the Tamil population in Jaffna and other areas,” he added.

It is the prerogative of the individual to take or decline the vaccine. Medication cannot be trust on people

    Ram Saturday, 20 February 2021 03:41 PM

Commander thinks no end of himself. That is why he make such silly statements

    Karl Saturday, 20 February 2021 04:10 PM

    Gayan Saturday, 20 February 2021 04:25 PM

It is the Army who gives blood in the north as vellalas refused blood from common tamils.

    Nana Saturday, 20 February 2021 04:30 PM

Don't you know the vaccination is only protecting the recipient himself, not the others(Tamil population in Jaffna or elsewhere) he who mingles with until the 70% of the population is fully vaccinated?

    RoaringCreek Saturday, 20 February 2021 04:33 PM

This type of attitude is the reason for resolution on Sri Lanka by the UNHRC. These vaccines need to administered in civilian hospitals. It the vaccines were developed in the army hospital then getting vaccinated at the army hospital is fine. May be these vaccines were developed at the Army Hospitals in Sri Lanka!

Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva in particular is a great humanist. He has proven this by slaughtering thousands of civilians. In a humanitarian way, of course.

This is the problem when military handle civic matters. There is a reason why military kept separate from civilian issues in advanced countries, purely because to stop stupid people to utter their stupidity in public. What a pathetic country

    TJ Saturday, 20 February 2021 05:00 PM

If you have no issues with their stance, then why do you want to elaborate further?

    Lokka Saturday, 20 February 2021 05:31 PM

Sorry, they are citizens of Tamil Nadu!

    Noname Saturday, 20 February 2021 06:12 PM

If they don't want the vaccine give it to someone else.

    Rax Saturday, 20 February 2021 06:29 PM

Sorry Sir minorities in this country no longer trust the government.

UK citizen Saturday, 20 February 2021 06:36 PM

As long as the vaccinators are well trained and under the supervision of a doctor or nurse there should be no problem whether it's army personal or layman involved. In UK the volunteers trained and supervised by medics give the vaccinations.

    Jeeves Saturday, 20 February 2021 07:36 PM

Clearly, even if the public want to reconcile; TNA politicians are hellbent on an aggressive path with continued animosity!

Military by force brought never ending war to the end, there after no such happenings, till Easter 2019,not only Tamils, but other communities and forces are also faced the same, so why carrying grudges, now compromise and work towards brighter future

    Tom Saturday, 20 February 2021 10:20 PM

It was LTTE,who were defeated by military, and they were not saints, so why democratically appointed members show anger to army, do you want us to believe that, you too are terrorists

    ChanakaJ Saturday, 20 February 2021 10:24 PM

People complain when we don't have the vaccine; then they complain when it's available! Nothing wrong with military helping with vaccine roll out. Even rich countries are doing this!

    Ups Saturday, 20 February 2021 10:26 PM

Health services said parliamentarians get the jab to ensure virus is not passing to your voters, if you won't take it means your voters reluctant to come and see you, so you may have less troubled from them, brilliant idea

    Buddhist Saturday, 20 February 2021 11:01 PM

Its sad to note Shavendra does not understand a peaceful civilian protest in this.

    vince Sunday, 21 February 2021 11:56 PM

it is not peaceful protestation it is stupidity. Now the people who follow these idiots will refuse vaccines. The result of more deaths may be. These beggars will have blood on their paws as a result.

    Thavamanis Sunday, 21 February 2021 12:02 PM
