After 2028, no one will be given teacher appointments except for Bachelor of Education graduates from the National University of Education, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

Addressing a committee meeting at the Ministry, he said that one national university, which combines all 19 faculties of education, will produce graduates in four years.

"Advanced Level (A/L) Z-score recruits undergraduate candidates based on subject-wise vacancies from the first round. After three years of study, in the last year, practical training on teaching will be given, and a high-quality teacher will be sent to the classroom," the minister said.

The purpose of this meeting was to get support from the provincial level for the implementation of future education development programs planned at the national level and to raise education at the provincial level.

He said that the responsibility of implementing national policies is assigned to the Education Ministry, and it is the duty and responsibility of the provincial education authorities to implement those national policies at the provincial level. These activities should be done with a good link between the national and provincial levels.

Although only a few schools in the country have shown positive results, we cannot be satisfied as a country, and the main objective of the Ministry is to provide equal opportunities in education to every child by improving the entire school system of the country by providing the necessary human and physical resources, including suitable teachers, the Ministry said. You only need two things to be a good teacher a very good understanding of the subject matter and a flair for teaching. Just imagine what would happen, say, of all private tuitions are banned in Sri Lanka, students would struggle, exam results would be poor and we may be forced bring down the standard of exam questions to make students get good scores in exams . Why ? Our Private Tutors are infinitely better than our School Teachers. Our School Teachers DO NOT HAVE in-depth knowledge in the subject they teach and consequently don’t have the passion for the subject to explain concepts and make learning easy and interesting. That is why parents are spending so much money and sending their children to the “Second School” where the private Tutors have super knowledge and passion for teaching. If I were the education minister I would gradually remove most of the teachers and employ all the private tutors as full time school teachers with very high pay.

You are absolutely right the most important thing for a teacher is to has a solid knowledge in the subject they teach and a passion for teaching, this is common sense . How could learning about the theories of education, that is what a bachelor of education is all about, can help our teachers. If any teacher wants let them read on their own and learn about the competing different educational theories but making this as the compulsory learning to become a teacher will destroy our school education like what has happened in government schools in Europe and North America. Let us copy the Private Schools from the Western Countries where knowledge of the teacher in the subjects being taught is given the top priority and the educational theories are ridiculed and not welcomed in schools.

It is really an irony, while this move is a good thing for the nation; what about Parliamentarians, what qualifications they must possess; to go to Parliament, the nations highest institution, We all know how qualified they are, Thats why this country is in this dire situation today.

Recruits mustn't be teachers who take the job for the sake of working six hours per day or abundance of entitled vacations. And must have very good teaching abilities and sound knowledge of the subject as well as other interpersonal skills. They must be enthusiasts of making this country a better place. In my school days, there were very few teachers with the above-mentioned capacities. Overall, becoming a teacher should be a tough pathway and for the same their compensation should be high as well.
