Technology State Minister Kanaka Herath revealed plans to introduce a new act shortly while speaking to the media after joining an observation tour of Vega Innovation Company, located in Maradana Trace Complex.

“A separate act has not been established for research and development in our country. As the Technology Ministry, we hope to work for it in the future. Through this, we hope to provide more opportunities for research and development in the country. Especially for university students as well as other researchers to create that opportunity,” he said.

During his visit, Herath discussed with Vega Innovation Company Chief Executive Officer Dr. Harsha Subasinghe about the inventions of the technical sector in Sri Lanka and the challenges in the field.

Speaking to the media after the observation visit, he mentioned that the necessary facilities for new discoveries should be increased and the opportunities available in the country should be expanded. He said President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s ambition is to move the country towards a digital economy.

For that, Herath pointed out that Sri Lanka should move towards new products with modern technology and said that research in the technical sector is key.

Also, in the field to promote the use of artificial intelligence in the country, he said a task force will be appointed, consisting of experts in the field.

He said the president has given instructions to the Technology Ministry to prepare a concept paper on the same.
