A brawl which broke out during an after-party in New York following the first-ever Miss Sri Lanka New York pageant has tarnished the image of the Sri Lankan community in the US.
Angelia Gunasekara was crowned the first-ever Miss Sri Lanka New York at the pageant held at The Vanderbilt in South Beach last week.
Following the event, an after-party was held for which tickets had been sold to the public.
A brawl had taken place during the after-party involving a few US-based Sri Lankans and Americans.
Video footage of the brawl went viral on social media and drew strong reactions from the public both in Sri Lanka and in New York.
Several people, including a number of influential individuals, took to social media and expressed outrage at the behaviour of those involved in the brawl.
The public said that the incident had tarnished the image of the Sri Lankan community in the US.
Some also attacked Chandimal Jayasinghe, the National Director of Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World, who was to be a guest at the event, by linking him to the brawl.
However, Jayasinghe told Daily Mirror that he did not attend the event as his visa was delayed.
He said that he extended support for the show via Zoom, but was not physically present.
Jayasinghe also said that the brawl had nothing to do with the show and that it was at the after-party.

The brawl , was it Sri Lanka vs Sri Lanka or Sri Lanka vs White America. If it was the first utter disgrace , if latter it was Sri Lankan defending.

We take our culture, traditions and social behaviour wherever we go, and this is a typical example. We know deep down this is our normal behaviour when something does not go our way, no communication - settle with a brawl. Remember our own parliamentarians, our school matches? This is the example we have set for the people to follow, wherever they are. Look at our history and social behaviour closely, and what we have is an imaginary 2500-year culture.

When the first and foremost qualification to become elected to parliament as 'POLITICIAN', PREFERRED by the "Thanakola Chewing Punnakku Eating" electorate is, NONE OTHER THAN “Chain Snatchers, Harak Horus, Rapists, Murderers, convicts, Sex Maniacs” etc., who seem to be the RESPECTED Lot to become parliamentarians – represent the PEOPLES’ SOVEREIGNITY!!?? Chandimal, obviously a self appointed Mariyakade representative out of nowhere manages the injections of the whitening desperate aging women and men in Sri Lanka. He went there to attend this thamasha and wonder on what basis he participated on this via zoom. These are stupid evasive tactics. This is not the first time this sort of brawls happened with his involvement. Shame.

Vijaya married Pandian princess and also brought 700 brides from Tamil Nadu for his friends. According to Mahavamse, that is the origin of Sinhalese people. That means 100% of the original Sinhalese people came from the womb of Tamil women. The king who adopted Buddhism first in Sri Lanka was also a Tamil king...Deva Nambiya Theesa. This history shows that Tamils and Sinhalese in SL are very closely connected people. If the Sinhalese people understand this, they should feel guilty for treating Tamils like second class citizens in the country.

We would hold whatever media institution in very high esteem if they expose the names and photos of those who were involved! This is a shameful act. Much more shameful than robbing billions! The pedigree of those village folks now domiciled in the US is much evident. These are the same type of folk who came waving the SL flag in November 2019 to 'save the nation'. Now see what a mess they made? What more can you expect from a set of people who couldn't get a life right here? Wherever they go they will bring shame to SL.

It is not very clear why this brawl started and for what reason otherwise one can assume that all these guests are mad and need psychiatric treatment or there is some sinister reason for all details being camouflaged

The so-called beauty pageant cum fund raiser was nothing more than an attempt to have a typical Sri Lankan dance party with plenty of liquor. The raucous music, gruesome dancing, and even the contestants imbibing in the ample supply of liquor had no place in a conventional beauty contest. Maybe these Sri Lankans should have done their homework on how to behave in a wider society. Now the pundits are blaming the media. The old philosophy of shooting the messenger.

Has this got anything to do with unfairness in selecting the winner, as happened in the Mrs. Sri Lanka contest here a few months ago. Sri Lankans should first learn fairplay and unity within its shores, irrespective of whether this brawl is connected to the pageant results or not.

Everyone would have had a good laugh, a good pissing drink up, a few sing songs and an overall jolly good time without all this “Adi Pudi” silliness.
