Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry today called for a multi-party effort to set up a domestic truth seeking mechanism that would prevent an external mechanism that has been proposed by the recent UNHRC resolution.

“We call for a multi-party effort to set up a truth seeking mechanism that would prevent an external mechanism. I invite all parties representing Parliament to agree on a common mechanism. We also invite those who are unfairly accused and those who are grieving to come forward and state their cases under a domestic mechanism. If we do not do this, the mechanism might go out of the country,” the Minister said.

‘We also invite those Sri Lankans who are living all over the world to build our nation. We invite them all irrespective of the races,” the Minister added.

“We reject the external evidence gathering mechanism and the resolution as a whole as it is contradictory to our constitution. Sri Lanka made it clear that it will not comply with any external mechanism but the sponsors of it presented it with new elements. I have met the heads of foreign missions in Colombo and written to foreign Ministers and appeased them on the Sri Lankan situation. Through my engagement it is clear that a vast majority of UNHRC resolution are with Sri Lanka at heart and fully support us. They cannot express it at the time of voting as they were no match for the incensed pleasure of the powerful sponsors of the resolution. It was no match for Sri Lanka as well. Sri Lanka is grateful to the nations who withheld pressure and supported it. ‘Over half of the nations did not support the resolution and seven nations voted against. Some of those who voted for last year’s resolution are no longer members of the council anymore,” he also highlighted.

The resolution was yet another example of the divisive and political nature of the UN Human Rights Council which is in contrary to its founding principles of universality, impartiality and non-selectivity,” he also said.

“We also note that the hard stance taken by the sponsors to bring in the resolution fulfills its domestic political objectives,” the Minister stressed.

The Minister also noted that questions have been raised on the finances allocated to implementation of the resolution at a time the UN is facing financial constraints.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Domestic Truth seeking mechanism is not an alternative as people will not have trust on this for fairness and justice. So this is waste of time an money.

Insensed pleasure of the powerful sponsors sounds like the sponsors have had an orgy with a tremendous climax resulting in Sri Lanka having a lot to clean up. Common Minister stop playing bed rugger with this long overdue matter and implement a credible domestic system with advisors and observers from former Sri Lankan judges etc now serving in countries like Fiji Papua New Gunea

If the UNHCR is now a divisive and political outfit Sri Lanka should consider first improving their own domestic mechanisms to sincerely improve HR related issues and then seek ways to move out of the UNHCR membership. Most certainly those of us living in Sri Lanka realise that a pathetically biased and even sinister campaign is happening in the UNHCR to discredit Sri Lanka unfairly. Allow UNHCR to set up their headquarters in Sri Lanka and see if there is victimisation and racism that is greater than or less than what one sees in USA or UK.

Its sad to hear qualified ministers like lawyer Mr Ali Sabry or Dr Harsha first talking big and then not acting at all for years and years. Basically becoming only as good as the rest. Please minister make things happen and get those mechanisms established. Some of us like to elect qualified educated Ministers like you but you guys must walk the talk.

My dear Sabry, stop singing for your supper. You know absolutely nothing has been done to setup domestic mechanism. Even if it is setup, it will be like Thajudeen case where Police, JMO's, Judges (all Sinhalese) will hatch, manipulate, plot against the truth. This is a fact seen over and over again in SL. The external mechanism was the best ever done by UNHRC. Today you are singing because of the bowl of soup and you are not a victim of what happened in the north. Today, you will be compensated 10 times more value for your house that was burnt down, due to this activity because Sinhalese pay and look after well those few arseholes in the minorities who play hench-aiya with them to cover up all their criminality. In the end, didn't your mother and father teach you good Islamic values?

Multi party home grown mechanisms will never ever work nor satisfy the grievances experienced. This man does not understand the seriousness of the situation. He thinks he is smarter than UNHRC. He wants to delay the truth seeking mechanism for another two years.

The FM says a local mechanism should be implemented to prevent an external mechanism. It is not for the purpose of finding the truth and seek reconciliation with those affected. He also believes the trend is changing in the UNHCR due to the rotation of members and some day in the future the SL case will be forgotten. Saving Gota was easy but this is a different ball game.

Mr. Minister, what garbage are you talking to the gallery? Did all the looting and on-going corrupt deals happen under the Constitution? Your words are not worth a damn cent. We know what the resolution says, and you can cry until the cows come home, your local mechanism is another "gundu" for the people. All this talk about you talking to local heads of missions is to divert the people and show your voice is heard by them. Why is that we don't hear any comments or statements from them about their agreements to your stupid proposals? The truth-seeking mechanism should punish the guilty and until we are ready to do the right thing by everyone, genuinely and openly, we will live with forever.

I do not understand why their is opposition to a local or International probe. If no war crimes happened what are we afraid of?

every time an external mechanism is proposed, the Government comes out with some lies about its botched internal mechanisms. They have been fooling the international players for many years with no progress on any front.

Solution to UNHRC challenges regarding 2009 war has been a nagging serious issue for years having many indirect repercussions too. Therefore my view is domestic mechanism for UNHRC challenges or like solution without delay should be implemented for not to pave way to an external mechanism. Domestic mechanism is our promise for years. Or otherwise open the door for external mechanism to come in which may likely soon with our day by day delay of domestic mechanism.

If we had applied the UN principles of universality, impartiality and non-selectivity in our failed beggar paradise we wouldn’t be roasted in the UNHRC. We falsely say we are a Buddhist country when we don’t practice what Buddha peached. People like Sabri have contributed to our self destruction
