Claiming that there was a move to form an alternative parliament called the People’s Council or the ‘Mahajana Sabhawa’, leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said there was no legal provisions in terms of the Constitution for such an entity.

He told Parliament that there were media reports to the effect that there was a move to form a People's Council which is similar to Parliament and that it is in contrary to the Constitution.

He said in terms of the Constitution, Parliament was vested with the legislative power and that it could not be transferred to any other body.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhane said the matter would be referred to the Committee of Privileges. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

If parliament has become a den for thieves People will find alternative to form whatever as appropriate.Aragalaya clearly has said that need People's council outside parliament to rectify the shortcomings in ruling party and the government. We can see country has gone to bankruptcy mostly due to corruption but none of the VIP thieves are in jail.

Too many councils to rule, no one to do real work, too many people in the ruling class to share the commissions resulting in country reaching close to total bankruptcy every day. Abolish all councils, reduce 225 into 100 .

The same constitution does not allow criminals and robbers to be in parliament. What have got to say about it. Nothing I suppose.

Good idea. Law abiding educated and sensible people must form a shadow council and hold meetings and pass progressive policies to educate people this is what a real parliament do. They can even publish a new constitution. This is a public education process. It is not illegal to have that kind of education process. In addition to national council, have district councils as well.

Parliament can still be in charge to legislate but there can be any number of bodies outside the Parliament to monitor and report the activities of the Parliament to the votes of the Land. This need not be in the Constitution.
