While denying speculations on moves to privatise State-owned and loss-making Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardana said a proposal has been submitted to the Cabinet to lease out a land block owned by SLRC to a State-owned higher educational institute.

“We received SLRC as a gift from the Japanese government. We will not sell Rupavahini.  However, the current debt of SLRC has risen to Rs.1 billion.

With rising debt levels, the interest cost is also rising, thereby, we are struggling to continue operations of SLRC,” Gunawardana stressed.

As the government is engaged in a national programme to reform SOEs, he said a proposal has been submitted to lease out an underutilised land block owned by SLRC to a State-owned higher education institute for 30 years.

don't see how leasing from one loss maker to another will help the national problem much. If it runs at a loss, stop it or sell it. Plenty of other tv channels these days.

Leasing out that land of SLRC does not sort any issue. It only brings in resources for those who are robbing to abuse again. After that, what? Daisy archie or Bandula's grandmother are going to make another donation to SLRC? Utter bullshit Minister. No need to sell SLRC, but the Management of this institute needs to outsourced giving them targets and total independence on making it profitable. All those hench-aiya's in Rupavahini should be kicked out by this new Management. New Policies outlined keeping out all Politicians.

Now the journey of govt media institutions such as SLRC, SLBC, ITN and Lake House has come to an end. No more public interest in them. There is hardly any chance to revive.

It will be GOOD NEWS, if all state owned TV and Radio stations are privatised. No more blowing your own trumpet, no bribing and many more .

Every department and corporation run by the state is a total loss in this country. Why is that?
