The ruling party faction led by Member of Parliament (MP) Nimal Lanza remains resolute in its determination to establish a new political alliance aimed at bolstering the candidacy of President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential elections, despite stern warnings and resistance from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) under which they contested the 2020 general elections, Daily Mirror learns.

Sources close to the development said that SLPP's National Organizer Basil Rajapaksa has raised significant concerns with the president over the recent maneuvers by MP Nimal Lanza and his fellow party members. These concerns revolve around the propriety of undertaking such a politically significant exercise by individuals who were originally elected under the SLPP banner at the last general election.

The political faction led by MP Nimal Lanza has not only secured the backing of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) but has also managed to garner support from select SLPP MPs. Amid this political turmoil, MP Namal Rajapaksa, is reportedly expressing unease regarding the emergent political configuration.

In the backdrop of these developments, the Lanza-led faction convened a crucial meeting at the residence of Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera on Tuesday evening. The agenda of the meeting centered around deliberations on the faction's future course of action. Notable attendees at the gathering included ministers such as Nimal Siripala de Silva, Susil Premajayantha, Duminda Dissanayake, John Seneviratne, and Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

Despite protests from the SLPP, they have unequivocally resolved to press forward with the formation of the new political alliance.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, who commented on the latest development, said the factions led by MPs Dulles Alahapperuma and Wimal Weerwansa defected from the party earlier only to end up in political wilderness. He said the same fate would befall the Lanza group.

“We are confident that our supporters remain with us no matter what,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

How many of the SLPP lot were originally with other parties? Is Basil short of memory? When the Rajapakshes were in power didn't they offer money and lure people to their party? Now it is payback time for the greedy Rajapakshes and the thieves of SLPP. The SLPP as a party has brought the country to the dogs.

The alliance is trying to ruin the country further and fill their pockets and live the merry thereafter. So we the voters should beware of these crooks.Furthermore they do no have the capability and intelligence and will on country development

What one cannot understand is whether the voters too will support them. Does it necessarily mean that each time a MP crosses over, each and every voter will follow suit?

All your new parties ( Old book with new cover) will be blown away as the people now know who you all are.

I was surprised that Basil is so thick, that he felt like people will support him as a president. The Sinhalese masses should rather jump into the Indian Ocean than support this robber.

Most of the Pohuttuwa Mps are struggling for their own survival not for the benefit of the masses

All these factions, defections and alliances at a time when the country is dishing out exponential sums of foreign exchange to purchase an increasing list of consumables like eggs, chicken, vegetables, fruits and medicines. Not a trace of a measure to boost exchange earnings through manufacture. The crisis will be heightened when foreign debt payments begin.

They too benefited from SLPP Thursday, 03 August 2023 01:06 PM

Mr.William! We can understand the mindset of these party jumpers. They want to put the entire blame on the SLPP and its leaders. This think that the voters can be fooled to assume, that they are new born babies. They try to forget that they too benefited from these corrupt leaders who made the nation bankrupt. Let them not get on the stage in the future.

We all like to see SLPP is broken into pieces.

Could some of those named as joining Lanza's proposed Alliance, have been Drug Addicts at some time in the past ?

Aliens will come and take all politicians very soon to make all people HAPPY!.

I am glad to see that the above citizens realize which pary and WHO were directly and or indirectly responsible for the downfall of the country. Keep speaking up as it looks like BASIL thinks the MASSES have lapsed into memory loss and can be fooled once again. None of the Rajapaske's and or their stooges should be given the light of day and be reelected into Parliament. If this were to happen, it would only be a matter of time Sri Lanka will be renamed SRI CHINA and a Military Base will be approved and or set up at Hambantota Port and the rest will be HISTORY.

They can have a Gaja leaf as the party symbol to show that the party is led by a drug lord.

    Somapala Thursday, 03 August 2023 09:02 PM

When Lanza with the Rajapaksas, Lansa was called Drug mafia. Now Lansa is a hero to all commenters here. Very funny.

    Bandara Saturday, 05 August 2023 10:52 AM

WHY DOESN'T THE SLPP EXPEL THESE DISSIDENTS IF THEY DONT TAKE PROMPT ACTION, MORE SLPP MEMBERS WILL JOIN LANZA AND THE PARTY WILL HAVE TO BE DISSOLVED ?
