The Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) has a due payment of Rs. 30 million for their electricity bill, LRH Director Dr. G. Wijesuriya said today.

Due to the unavailability of sufficient funds and the current economic crisis, the hospital management was unable to settle the amount.

"Therefore, we had to experience power disruptions on Wednesday (26) at canteens and security offices, but it had not affected the hospital patient treatment centres," Wijesuriya said.

"It is our responsibility to pay the electricity bill according to our usage. Therefore, we have decided to discuss with the health ministry officials to find a way to settle the due electricity bill," the doctor added.

He also mentioned that people should understand that the hospital service is a service which cannot be used to gain an income. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

The health services are provided by the people's tax. Government must allocate funds for that. The Director should also look at ways to reduce the electricity consumption at the hospital - Eg: replacing fluorescent lamps with LED lamps, using A/C at a pre-determined minimum temperature (Eg. 25 C), cleaning ceiling fans to increase their efficiency, etc.

Build a solar system and try to use that. Government and any cable donor should invest for that as this is not a profit making place. Also top management of the hospital should promote donation account so that people will donate when ever possible.

LRH is a service-oriented medical service that has no income of its own. There are various ways of resolving the financial crisis it faces. Request for a voluntary payment from all those seeking admissions. Request public contributions to settle electricity bills.

Electricity should be provided free of charge to all government hospitals, since government hospitals provide free medical services to the public.

Mahesh, Your suggestion to use Solar Power is the best way out as it will eliminate electricity bills Altogether. Why not the concerned L.R.H. Authorities work out the details and call for Public Donations? I am sure, there will be immense Public Support for this Project. As the project could be costly, it could be divided into stages and implemented in stages.

Free health without electricity is only a joke. we need to cut down expensive ministerial offices and pajeros and settle this, overdue and demanded ad nauseum

Install solar power? Do these imbeciles who run these services have such enlightenment? Furthermore, waiting until the bill reaches Rs 30 million. What a sordid way to treat sick children.

Govt has to pay this. Reduction of bill is only possible with a solar system.

Our government should open a bank account and ask any well wishers to contribute money for this fund. This money can be used to pay for good use. The only think is Ministers and MPs should not have access to this account. Once the account is opened I will contribute Rs:100,000 and also ask my friends to contribute as well.
