Claiming that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was tactfully attempting to become the President going against the people's demand, the Janatha Vimukthi peramuna (JVP) today urged Prime Minister Wickremesibnghe to resign before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa submits his resignation, without putting the country into further unrest.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissnayake making a special statement said all sections of the people including religious leaders demanded the resignation of both the President and the Prime Minister and said any attempts by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe to become the President would aggravate unrest in the country.

He said Prime Minister Wickremesinghe should resign before President Rajapaksa submits his resignation and added that if he was not doing so,the President should remove him from the premiership as his final task.

Mr. Dissanayake said if Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was functioning as the Prime MInister when President Rajapaksa resigned, the incumbent Prime Minister becomes the Acting President according to the Constitution and added that if the Premiership was vacant at the time of the President's resignation, then the Speaker becomes the Acting President.

"New President is expected to be elected through a vote in parliament on July 20. Everyone is keeping an eye whether the new President would be elected in keeping with the people's demand or would go against their demand," he said.

He said some people were trying to allow Wickremesinghe to become the Acting President automatically and said there are two things to prevent Wickremesinghe from becoming the President. One is that he should resign as the Prime Minister before the President's resignation or the President should remove him before his resignation.

"We urge the President and the Prime Minister to resign without creating further unrest in the country. We have had enough chaos and unrest for the last few months. Every sector in the country is crippled now. It is the responsibility of the President and the Prime Minister to pay heed to the demand of the people and avert any more crisis," he said.

He alleged that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was conspiring to become the Acting President and then get elected as the new President in Parliament by commanding majority after buying over some MPs.

He said if Wickremesinghe resorted to such tactics and became the President for the rest of the term of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, he would have to face an even more unfortunate fate than President Rajapaksa.

Mr. Dissanayake said if Prime Minister Wickremesinghe becomes the President at any cost, people should take to the street and expel him and added that the JVP as a political force, will do everything possible to expel an illegitimate President who is against people's mandate. (Ajith Siriwardana)

100% Ranil needs to be the next President if SL people want food on their table. Grand illusions of a socialist communist taking over a country in 2022 will lead to nothing but mass starvation.

    Banda Wednesday, 13 July 2022 03:06 AM

Exactly. That's the truth.other wise people will suffer like never before.

    Lankan Wednesday, 13 July 2022 03:34 AM

Ranil has fed the nation well during his 6 terms as PM? Is that why they burnt his beloved books? Don't put this old man's life in danger and promote crappy ideas. Let him live in prison where he belongs in peace.

Reshan Ekanayake Wednesday, 13 July 2022 04:29 AM

Well, in the first place, Ranil is also to be blamed for LOSING the food that was on the table!!! Whether a communist or whatever party is elected as the next govt, people will well and truly need to be prepared to tighten belts for the next 2 to 3 years.

Tharindu Jayawardene Wednesday, 13 July 2022 05:03 AM

Funny how you compare ranil's neo-liberal ideology to anura's socialist communism that never existed.

Any new president who does not deliver to the expectations of the people will face the same consequences as Gota. Ranil has already lost his house. I hope he doesn't want to loose anything else that is left with him.

J.V.P. and peratugami members must get a mandate to rule the country. They have less than 5% of the vote. RW is there because he is one of the capable people who can get global support and take us out of this crisis. They never started this struggle. who named it "Janatha Aragalaya". It's a mystery, right? Get away from public property and stop threatening democracy. Otherwise, you will have to face the consequences like never before. We won't let you stay in peace.

No for Anura. The despicable act of breaking things and inciting violence reminds of the past. Highly educated set of people needs to run this country. The only political party with some head is SJB although I dislike Sajith. Harsha and Erans expertise need to be used.

Ketheesh Waran Wednesday, 13 July 2022 04:00 AM

AKD and JVP should understand that the current Speaker lies a lot and worse than Ranil. He is also from SLPP. He will be more loyal to Rajapakshas

Senior Citizen Wednesday, 13 July 2022 04:40 AM

There is no better leader than RW experienced, skilled, politically mature and with high calibre international connections to save the country from collapse and economic recovery. Not all talk no action JVP

    Sen Wednesday, 13 July 2022 05:06 AM

GR was appointed with 6.9million voters consents,if this person has to leave bcz rejected his administration, how RW going to be even temporarily president, who were rejected in many elections, he seems waiting to have it,but people won’t him there, leave the PM office alone with GR

Andrew Silva Wednesday, 13 July 2022 05:43 AM

KD are you in the dream world? If Your pal Ranil is made the President the money in the kitty will be distributed among the Rajapakshas and poor us will be starving. Socialist communist or or communist socialist will be better than Ranil and co.

    AB Wednesday, 13 July 2022 05:49 AM

Ranil trying to play under hand game, should not allow him to be the acting president

    Lawry Wednesday, 13 July 2022 06:03 AM

The country rejected him at the General Elections. He is just a parasite. A rejected bug to be President should certainly amuse the bug. The soulless zombie.

ruwani fernano Wednesday, 13 July 2022 10:59 AM

You lost yr ancestral home and decimated the largest political party in Srilanka to naught by clinging to power .Just let go at least now before you destroy yrself completely .You claim you read history but you seem to have learnt nothing.

Anne Karunaratne Wednesday, 13 July 2022 11:12 AM

Most certainly not AKD or SP!!!! Let Ranil take the reins.
