The government was expecting to fully implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

He said that the Social Justice Commission will be established in order to build a country where everyone can live in harmony, by solving the problems of the people belonging to all sections of the population.

The President said this during his address at the National Thai Pongal Festival held at the Jaffna Durga Hall this afternoon (15).

The President stated that in order to build a country where all races coexist and achieve economic prosperity, everyone must return to the Sri Lankan identity established by the late Mr D.S Senanayake 75 years ago.

He said that a statement on the government's steps toward reconciliation will be made public in February and that a meeting of party leaders will be convened next week to discuss the matter.

President Wickremesinghe also stated that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's work will be accelerated in order to provide relief to the families of the disappeared.

Can you please explain what is the identity Don Stephen Senanayake established? All the so called independence fighters ended up educating their generations in UK, carrying English names and owning homes in upscale parts of Colombo since they were the most educated people in the country and had the wealth advantage. A privilege denied to the average Sri Lankan who was forced to adapt to a Sinhala only official language which prevented them from functioning in English. A vital part of progress for any Asian country. Sri Lanka does not need to go 75 years backwards to progress. That was the start of all the problems we have now. Just have a strict justice system where no one is above the law. Then peace and harmony will take care of itself.

Beginning of the end of unitary status of Sri Lanka. The war could not do it because mostly rural poor youth gave their lives. But mega corruption and mismanagement by politicos and high ranking professional (who got their education free) plus the unaffordable lifestyles of the rupee rich (who do not bring any dollars to the country) have made it possible by driving the country to bankruptcy. However in away it is good because hard working Northerners are bogged down by being with the Southerners who are corrupt and lazy

Just saying this in advance of Indian external affairs ministers visit so that there are no contentious issues to discuss. Once he goes back it will be business as usual in keeping with our practices in the past. Maybe the best solution is to have a two state solution with both states in autonomous association with India because as per current situation the future is really bleak for us.
