The Government has decided to go ahead with the reform of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) despite the recommendation by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security not to do so, a Minister, who did not wish to be named, said today.

It was reported earlier that the Sectoral Oversight Committee headed by MP Sarath Weerasekara had recommended not to privatize SLT.

"The government has already decided to go ahead with the reform before the Sectoral Oversight Committee came up with its recommendation. Therefore it is likely that the government will go ahead with the original plan," the Minister said.

It was highlighted that the copies of the Sectoral Oversight Committee decision has been sent to President Ranil Wickremesinghe. (Yohan Perera)

Government will sell one by one all Sri Lankan public property and assets and they don't care about the future generations of this country...all what they want is to secure their seats and they don't have any plan at all ..if they keep doing this how long they dba do so this .. You know what happened when they did with Chinese loans and even today people pay the price. .this means more and more people leave this country for good

slt cannot survive for long as their internet charges are very high compared to dialog and the rest -so its better to privatise before they record losses and become a burden

    Gb Friday, 09 June 2023 11:23 PM

Slt has less latency and more bandwidth, hence the price

Good news. Please name the saboteurs from this sectoral oversight committee please.

Either way appoint a chairman with better honesty and capability. A man who ruined his own listed company heldiv by siphoning its wealth should not be at the helm

All Western telecom operators are privately owned and have put in place effective control systems to manage risks whether security or otherwise. What is needed is an Independent regulatory body set up under a special parliamentary act to have an oversight of its operations. IMF is not that foolish to lend funds on commitment to privatise loss making economic institutions.

We once fought against the LTTE now we want to do business with them. See where this headed in the coming months. The Rajapakse/RW curse will take this country down even further.

    Tariq Friday, 09 June 2023 09:28 PM

Damn good. High time to privatise loss making SLT instead talking Sri Lankan Airlines all the time

Excellent. When the decision to privatize has been made on sound economic policies, such a committee with people without any capacity is a wastage of time and money

    Sivalingam Friday, 09 June 2023 10:47 PM

Current SLT chairman has NO qualifications to be chairman of a private Telecom company. Only qualification is son in law of a leech of Diyawannawa.

Why was the Committee appointed if their recommendations were to be rejected unilaterally ?

The man who is on the top is not interested in any way of arriving at a decision by discussing with parties concern ,since he is back by 134 rouges in the parliament.

Best news for today. Made my day! Privatize it before the subversives grab power through the foolish voters votes. Ink it in such a way that it cannot be reversed! Otherwise the next main ‘direction’ promises for elections would be to make all properly run and profitable ventures (estates, service, utilities) which are private be Nationalized and run by ‘Comrades’ !

Sam Silva Saturday, 10 June 2023 07:39 PM

Don't believe until it happens. Even if it happens they could reverse it just by a overnight gazette which we are familiar.

    Jude Saturday, 10 June 2023 06:45 AM

This is how politicians make money!! If SLT not making money you can get expert advice to turnaround!! Why government giving up a revenue stream to the coffers!!

A COMMITTEE SHOULD BE APPOINTED TO STUDY AND REPORT ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE SECTORAL OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE ?

James Fernando Saturday, 10 June 2023 10:13 AM

If you look at all the developed countries, government does not own any business. Everything is privatised and there no security threat created from privatisation of telecom industry. Government are there to govern countries and not to run businessess.

    Shantha Saturday, 10 June 2023 02:50 PM

Most of the members of so called sectorial committee are uneducated fellows. President must go head with the privatization. Not only SLT other state corporation also to be privatise. It will benefit the public. Now government corporations are only financing the Minister's and the trade union leaders. Chairmans are puppets and do not have any education or experience in managing this type of public institutions.

    anil Saturday, 10 June 2023 05:56 PM

There must be a hidden western agenda Ranil is hiding behind the privatization of profitable companies like SLT, Hilton. We know Ranil only works for the benefit of westerners and their protégé Colombo crowd.

Just do it Saturday, 10 June 2023 09:50 PM

Please privatize ALL govt entities for efficient service, lower prices for consumers and profitability for govt.
