Govt. contemplates to impose MRP on chicken

The government has discussed imposing a maximum retail price (MRP) on chicken to control the price or if found necessary, to import chicken, minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Though the government gives priority to protecting the local poultry industry, the price of chicken meat has risen rapidly in the country and the shortage of eggs has not been solved yet, he said.

A discussion took place at the ministry in this regard, with all the industrialists involved in the poultry production industry.

To control the increase in the price of chicken as well as reduce the current shortage of eggs, a proposal with the agreement of the local poultry industry will be submitted to the Cabinet next week.

It is the government's responsibility to protect the consumer as well as the nutritional requirements of the people of the country, the minister said.

However, a report with information related to the decisions reached in this discussion will be submitted to the cabinet meeting next week, the minister added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Import chicken do not try the failed MRP again Friday, 09 June 2023 08:56 PM

Government cannot have local producers under its thumb. All developed countries allow for minimal import duties for food stables imported into them. Otherwise they would be taken to World Trade Organisation for blocking free markets trade. Instead of trying to beat the local Chicken mafia with price controls, allowing for imports will balance the market and make the businesses that are not profitable to venture away from chicken into other fields.

If government decides to import chicken from INDIA, that would lead to HEALTH related issues as all rotten chicken will be imported.

Government gave up on price controls some months back on chicken meat. They knew it was always ineffective, now they try to threaten to bring it back. The shop owners will not budge. Unless free market with imports allowed to happen the cycle of wrongdoing and tricks with threats will continue.

Now it is becoming the norm for the Minister to import any item whenever he finds it difficult to effect price control ? There is no issue now of lack of Foreign Exchange etc as there is the chance of including a hidden Commis ?

@Amaran There are many health issues like dengue here. Bird flu if it happens in India will come across wild birds. It is only lobbying by chicken mafia falsely promoting negative about Indian chicken meat that is concerning. Could be India haters often vegetarians who are confusing the gullible public
