While highlighting the measures to be taken to prevent and minimise possible gas explosions, the Committee to Investigate LP gas explosions said a total of 131 such incidents had been reported across the country during the period from January 01, 2021 to December 01.
The committee which had a thorough study on the issue requested people to be alert and careful when purchasing gas cylinders to see whether there is any leaks.
"Besides, if people suspect the domestic LP gas cylinders, it needs to be immediately placed outside and consumers need to contact their sales agents or reach relevant officials via 011 5 811 927 or 011 5 811 929," the committee said.
The public have also been urged not to experiment unscientific methods which might put them in danger but to leave it to the experts.
Moreover, the Committee said although there are no incidents of gas cylinder explosions, it advised the public to make sure the regulator, gas hose, and cooker meet the required standard. "The SLS standards for Regulators are SLS - 1180 while SLS - 1172 is for hoses. The recommended usage period for a regulator is 5 years and for hoses is 2 years," it stated. In addition, the general public has been warned not to remove the regulator from the cylinder but to disconnect lever so that the gas supply would be stopped.
These measures were announced by the expert committee appointed by the President under the chairmanship of Prof Shantha Walpolage from the Chemical and Process Engineering Department of Moratuwa University. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Don't put the blame on the user. Supplier should have informed the change of gas composition in advance
