The Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) said today it had a discussion with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to obtain at least 50 low-floor electric buses to add to the existing fleet.
LPBOA chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said the association requested the UNDP to grant a 50 percent subsidy and promised to invest the balance payment for the buses.
The LPBOA proposed the initial launch of the bus service in Colombo, its suburbs and Jaffan town, considering the geographical situation of these areas.
These low-floor electric buses cannot be driven in the hill country and frequently flooding areas.
These buses will be equipped with the digital ticketing system.
The discussion was fruitful and the UNDP assured it would fully support the implementation of the service as soon as possible, Wijerathne said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Electric Buses got multiple mechanical problems. Most agencies running electric Buses, experiencing downed electric Buses, often with no way to fix them due to unavoidable parts. For planning purposes, most electric Buses with conventional lead-acid batteries will operate between 40 - 80 miles on a single charge. However, electric Buses have limited driving range and long recharging times. Additionally, electric Buses require special charging infrastructure, which overall makes them less flexible than conventional diesel Buses.

My bus depot has 98 diesel low-floor buses and 2 Volvo electric buses. Initially, when we got the 2 electric buses the depot was plunged into darkness as the system overloaded. Please don't think electric buses will solve your problems. I like the idea of low-floor buses that allow people to get on and get off easily. Electric buses can not be used when it is being charged overnight where as diesel buses can be used 24 x 7. Diesel buses are proven technology and will give you bang for buck. Electric buses are new technology and is costly (but clean).

Instead of going into all electric buses explore the clean diesel hybrid buses.
