The main cause of unemployment in the country is a lack of enrollment in technology faculties, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

During a speech at the ministry, he stated that 75%  of university students used to apply for arts and commerce faculties, while 25% enroll in science and technology faculties, which has caused unemployment in the country.

"The main cause of unemployment in the country is a lack of enrollment in technology faculties."Students in rural areas do not have the resources to begin their studies in technological subjects. The main issue with them is that they do not have qualified teachers for mathematics, science and English subjects, "the Minister said.

Therefore, the ministry has decided to suspend all unsuccessful educational projects with immediate effect and said the country has come to a point where it can start successful projects after proper review.

"We cannot move forward by thinking in the traditional way. "We should think outside the box while taking policy decisions, "he said.

The ministry is considering a decision to promote the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) concept in schools, including in rural areas.

The Minister added that if the country were able to transform education in the country as per the STEAM concept, students would not want to stage any protest demanding employment.  (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Please start somewhere. Structure the syllabus in such a way that basics are thought from Grade 6. The present school text books aren't in an order. By the time a student studies something on Chemistry he will forget what he learnt in Physics or Biology. There isn't a continuity. Make the Text Books interesting.

Vocational subjects/training centers should be set up in every area with a population of 500,000 with foreign assistance, similar to German technical institutes all over the Island, which would help our skilled workers to seek foreign employment, bring dollar revenue to the country

No teachers Monday, 22 August 2022 08:29 PM

You are like the Archimedes who ran naked shouting Eureka! Eureka! You were in politics for so long, it is strange that none of you ever noticed this glaring hole in the wall for so long. COVID-19 is a blessing in disguise that it made you ponder "wither we go? Start with teachers for the subjects, then you can look for students.

Minister, Sri Lanka has been producing engineers in thousands since 1947, but it is not helping the country. What we need is not University but Technical Colleges to produce PRACTICAL ENGINEERS with two year Diploma to handle any project in Sri Lanka.University Engineering Faculties Must Be Shut.

Is it the lack of qualified students or the lack of job creation that is the cause of unemployment. Blame it on the whole mismanagement of corrupt unqualified ministers who cares a hoot about the progress of the country. The same rot is back in the parliament,.

"How could a man unable to say the word crow pronounce bigger words such as debt restructuring, bridging finance and austerity measures, when negotiating with the International Monetary Fund?" This is in reference to Basil, on a international media article. It is these kind of uneducated idiots being posted to post that requires business acumen, education and intelligence that caused the meltdown of the country.

(1.) Majority of kids get tuition for O/L Sinhala. Is the unexplainable high standard manufactured so as to give employment to the excess Arts graduates in the country? Time/Money that could be spent on science tuition. Some kids get through science through sheer hard work but without any interest in science. (2.) Even if they wish to do science for A/Ls, the exorbitant tuition cost of A/L science subjects plus the low intake of science students to universities act as another deterrent.

Why not cut Art faculty places then Tuesday, 23 August 2022 06:43 PM

Minister just trying to distract from real issues. Getting science degree does not mean better job prospect that commerce student. Art student if they can communicate well can succeed. If too many Art student big problem, why not cut the number of places for Art student in university?
