The Colombo High Court today fixed for October 27 to hear oral submissions regarding the preliminary objections raised by Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa challenging the maintainability of the corruption case filed against him by the Bribery Commission.
The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had filed indictments against Wimal Weerawansa for the alleged unlawful acquisition of money and assets, estimated at Rs. 75 million within a period of six years while serving as a Minister between 2009 and 2015. The Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption alleged that the former Minister had committed this offence by way of undeclared assets between January 01, 2009 to December 31, 2014.
Defence alleged that charges filed against Wimal Weerawansa under the Bribery Act cannot be maintained since he is not a public officer but a public representative.
Both defence and prosecution have already filed their written submissions regarding the preliminary objections.
The indictments were filed against the former Minister under 39 incidents based on monetary and property transactions estimated at Rs. 75 million.
The Bribery Commission's Director General alleged that the former Minister had unlawfully made 26 monetary transactions, constructed a house and purchased lands and vehicles in contravention of Section 23(a) of the Bribery Act.
The Bribery Commission's Director General further alleged that Weerawansa had owned these properties - deemed under the provision of the Act to be property acquired through bribery. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

This case will be withdrawn soon and Wimal will be released from this case by pottuwa leaders. They need him to win the election . He is very capable leader who can pull votes.Cheers SriLankan voters.

This corruption is in the period of 2011 to 2015 during Mahinda's time. Wimal robbed the Housing Authority and the State Engineering Corporation. He ruined the institutions and looted to the maximum. He was running the media unit for his small party at the Engineering Corporation. The chairmens of both institutions are also responsible and some senior managers of the same helped to rob this fellow.

This is the state of the Judiciary in Sri Lanka. Cases get postponed for years and then "nidoskota nidahas". Who cares if he is a public officer or an elected member? If he has done illegal deals he has to be punished. How many years this case is being dragged on? This why we need foreign judges on the bench.

At the swearing and oaths taking function of MR before CJ,Mahinda had hand shake with all ,but had a hug with Wimal. So MR will persuade RW to exonerate this guy as a gratitude for making MR president telling lies.
