The proposal submitted to the cabinet seeking approval with regard to promotions of police officers who have not been promoted for a long time, will be studied by a cabinet sub-committee prior to the approval, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said.

The Public Security Ministry said last month that minister Alles had submitted a proposal to the cabinet seeking approval to promote 8,312 policemen and 1,105 policewomen including sergeants and constables who have completed their service periods as of February 8, 2020.

According to the proposal, four Inspectors of the Special Task Force of Police (STF) who have completed 10 years of service, 290 Sub Inspectors including 54 from the STF, 1,630 police sergeants (122 from STF), 621 women police sergeants, 6,243 policemen, 484 policewomen, 15 police sergeant drivers and 130 police (constables) drivers have been found eligible to be promoted to the next rank.

It is reported that the service period of many police officers exceeds 30 years and the service period of the current position exceeds 15 years, and a large number of officers seeking promotion are about to retire.

Sources said that many officers concerned that approval for the proposal were further delayed due a political influence to include several other police officer's names, who have not completed the required service period, in the list.

However, the Public Security Minister told the Daily Mirror that paper has already been submitted to the cabinet and was delayed due to certain issues, but the cabinet sub-committee will study the proposal next week. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

You get promoted for being good in the Private sector, should role that out in Public sector!!!

Those who have complaints/investigations pending must not be promoted. If they get out then they can be considered for promotion with post seniority. We have seen high ranking officers promoted when investigation against them are pending. This must stop

Promote police officers based on their competency, not on the number of grey hairs on their head.

Demotions need to be dished out to those that shirk their duties. Promotions ought only be given on merit not years of ineffectual service. Too many good police are moved around (transfered) to satisfy political expediency or to pre-empt criminal investigations.

This promotion system is corrupt. IMF wants to lend money to this country, with this type of system shows IMF is filled fools!

Before promotions, first need to take a look to prune the SGO.O numbers. Police are top heavy and the funds are being eaten up to maintain SGO.O. There should be a 60% reduction in SGO.O. Funds saved must be directed towards the Welfare of the frontline Rank
