The British national, Kayleigh Fraser whose passport was taken in for examination by the Immigration and Emigration Department for posting content about protests on Social Media, has been informed to leave Sri Lanka before August 15.

The passport of the British national who posted about the protests at Galle Face had been seized by the Immigration and Emigration officers on August 2 after visiting her house.

She was informed to visit the Immigration and Emigration Department within 07 days for an investigation.

Earlier, the Immigration Department said that Fraser had been in Sri Lanka for medical reasons and that they were investigating whether she had violated her visa conditions, whilst staying in the country.

Accordingly, the Department had decided to terminate the visa issued to Fraser and had informed her to leave Sri Lanka.

Earlier media reports claimed that Kayleigh Fraser had been quite active on her Instagram account in airing photographs and videos pertaining to the recent mass protest campaigns on the ‘GotaGoHome’ struggle.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

So much for reviving Sri Lanka tourism. This matter was also brought in the British parliament.

Cholmondeley Pinto Thursday, 11 August 2022 11:22 AM

So many Srilankans get sent back from UK for visa violations and why not send this British national back. She is not a tourist. Do not confuse things

    Iwazaru Thursday, 11 August 2022 10:35 AM

Sri Lanka heading down the garden path. Sri Lanka invites a ship capable of spying and then explains a visitor sharing information on the GOTAGOHOME protest. What a joke.

It is forbidden for foreigners to be politically active in Sri Lanka. However, the constitutional right to free expression applies to everyone.

    Local Thursday, 11 August 2022 12:02 PM

Thats news to me !, I remember not so long ago foreign citizens who were wearing Red "sataka" were in the parliment .

Free speaker Thursday, 11 August 2022 03:41 PM

@Sokrates Unfortunately, I haven't seen in our constitution or laws about freedom of political expression. In the USA, their 1st Amendment to their constitution only allows freedoms for persons for persons with legal rights to stay in the country. So aliens, and those who come illegally are not afforded the same speech and religious protections. In my opinion Lanka until it has proper freedoms for speech and religion can never get to economic freedom.

Regardless of the question of the person under question, the whole world knows about what is happening in Sri Lanka or in any other countries within few seconds over internet etc. Why go and punish a visitor for sending few clips, this is how we treat our guests.

To all those talking negative of loss of tourism-This lady was on a medical visa. What would UK do if a SL in London was tweeting negative comments about the Queen

Ranil Go Home Thursday, 11 August 2022 04:14 PM

The Queen is a respectable person. Whereas, nobody respects our naki president.

Be Fair Thursday, 11 August 2022 11:32 AM

Try some nonsense when you travel, we will be treated worse

    Mudalali Thursday, 11 August 2022 11:35 AM

Now everyone can feel very rich with all the rupees being printed by the central bank. Bye bye tourism and with it any chance of earning foreign currency for our long suffering nation.

    ravin Thursday, 11 August 2022 11:40 AM

Same treatment will be getting by any Sri Lankan who will try to interfere with any foreign country's internal affaires. If I am not mistaken same will apply to any diplomat as well.

Non Sri Lankans cannot take part in political activities such as speaking publicly on a platform for or against a local party. Here it’s instagram that is photos and videos sharing, similar to a journalist taking photos. A powerful modaya’s ego is satisfied by unnecessarily asking this lady to leave.

Be fair Thursday, 11 August 2022 06:13 PM

@Siripala Can you please provide any evidence to your comment about our current PM, Dinesh Gunawrdana? I really find it heard to imagine Sri Lankan who study overseas have any interest in anything but getting what they came for as soon as possible. Either the qualification, or way to stay in that country.

    Modaya Thursday, 11 August 2022 12:29 PM

Don’t worry we have so many fake bloggers talking about Sri Lanka

    Nihal Thursday, 11 August 2022 12:36 PM

Thanks for the Support Keyleigh, see you Soon and Happy journey Home.

    Matheesh Thursday, 11 August 2022 01:14 PM

Don't confuse your partisan politics with immigration rules.Don't have colonial mentality

    Din Thursday, 11 August 2022 01:38 PM

instagrammer's and bloggers are the best way of promoting country's such as ours because they have a real good feel of the country and the people and give very good input for travelers so this intimidating people just for posting content of the protests is really not going to help

Nalin Perera Thursday, 11 August 2022 02:43 PM

Good. What medical grounds?? There are hundreds of Germans, Swiss, British and Austrian nationals living down south who get visa extensions through local middlemen without even coming to the Dept. of Immigration

    Ram Thursday, 11 August 2022 02:47 PM

Her Passport belongs to the government of the country of issue. SL authorities cannot seize it but can examine it and return, unless SL suspects it to be a forgery. Now British HC must question the high handed acts of the SL authorities

    Punchi Thursday, 11 August 2022 03:27 PM

Warning to any Instagramming tourist, uploading videos of fuel queues, food queues, people protesting, complaining of hardships, bound and gagged dead bodies on our beaches or any thing negative but accurate will get you deported. Videos informing that we are a paradise, a land of plenty etc everything false is what is welcomed

    Idiot Thursday, 11 August 2022 03:33 PM

Damn good!! If you're here for medical treatment do that and get out!! We're not Britain's colonial backyard anymore although her majesty's remnants seems to think so!! Try this in any other country like Singapore or Saudi Arabia and see what happens!!!??

    Siripala Thursday, 11 August 2022 05:08 PM

What Dinesh Gunawrdana did, when he was studying in the US, about the Vietnam war. He was actively involved in Anti-Vietnam war protests.

    Daya Thursday, 11 August 2022 06:18 PM

My question is whether she is vocal about the country situation or merely posting snaps of the protest. I am not sure how someone took photo and share on any media lead to violation of visa condition.

    GHT Thursday, 11 August 2022 10:50 PM

Wait! she will do the rest after she arrives in UK. Hope, she will gather all the international community to bash Sri Lanka, its leadership and/or its actions as TYRANT.

Anji Sharmila Govan Friday, 12 August 2022 03:30 AM

I am of English race and British nationality and I support the Srilankan government decision. Too much Social Media activity can cause trouble and sensitive issues should be avoided. By the way Instagram should not be considered a job/career per se:it is a pastime/hobby.

    jeewaratnehulla Friday, 12 August 2022 09:28 AM

The cardinal rule to follow if you are a tourist in any country, is to stick to the purpose of your visit and only complain if it effects to the conditions/standards of stay. Some are spies planted by vested interests( to distabise governments not in line with their geo political agendas) under tourist visas and their activities must be under scruitiny. This is nothing new and happens all over the world in places ( Those who preach of democracy or otherwise). It happens in Asia the Middle East, Africas, Russia, China the West , the Sub continent and where ever you name it. The reality is even in countries these social media platforms are created will interfere if its dertimental to their interests.

    Anthony. R Friday, 12 August 2022 01:36 PM

Surely Keyleigh followed up the invitation by Ranil Rajapakshas interview to a British Journalist, that the tourists can come to SriLanka and join the peaceful protesters at Galleface, Gota Go Gama. So why all this fuss.
