The Sri Lanka Army today urged the general public, engaged in protests, to assist unhindered passage of transport movements without blocking roads and causing inconvenience to the public.

Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva said that the Sri Lanka Army at the request of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has deployed Army troops and other forces to assist unhindered passage of transport movements since April 20.

“In the face of present economic constraints, people of Sri Lanka in various areas are holding protests and agitations in a peaceful manner. We have not to-date caused any hindrance to such peaceful protests. However, a few elements, who have shown up at those places were seen in the past few days engaged in particularly blocking road movements, causing inconvenience to the general public and transport of fuel supplies and essentials to different island-wide areas”, the Commander said.

“The Sri Lanka Army at the request of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), in an attempt to assist the Police, particularly for unhindered passage of transport movements since yesterday (20) has deployed Army troops and other forces to assist in this connection. Particularly we saw on Wednesday (20), some members of the general public who have volunteered and come forward to remove those blockades on their own, for which we would like to pay tribute to such volunteers”, he said.

“Let me earnestly appeal to all intelligent Sri Lankans to support our forces and the Police in the same way you all cooperated with the armed forces in the control of the most recent COVID-19 epidemic and the war against terrorism in the past. I kindly urge all Sri Lankans to lend the same degree of support at this critical juncture to all the armed forces and the Police for passage of essentials to the public by dispensing with roadblocks and other obstructions”, General Silva said.

Just think why people do these protests, then you will understand the real reason. If you are a real brave solder you should be protecting innocent people, not gnana akka.

Why don't you ask your patron GR to stop being a road block to us?

    Noel S Thursday, 21 April 2022 05:09 PM

This should come from IGP not from Army Comander. Have you taken over police duty?

    Dr P Coorey Thursday, 21 April 2022 05:40 PM

Totally agree with the army commander. Instead of helping the public such protests like blocking off roads inconvenience the public and lead to extra expense for members of the public at these difficult times

What about uninterrupted passage for bullets from toy guns.

We all live in a democratic country. Your government brought this country into this situation. It is you who are responsible to this situation.. Do not blame others.

By blocking transport you are causing more pain to already suffering people with increasing shortages. It is suicidal. Or homicidal

Between a rock and a hard place. What will your actions be? Impartial and fair like King Solomon or be the weapon of the unjust Leaders to silence the masses . Whatever your actions , the result will affect the lives of millions in this country. I urge you to choose Peace and Patience for the future of the country. I hope you have the courage and vision to leave the Military in a better position then when you accepted your current role. Let those in the future remember it as a time when the law was upheld and justice was fair .The future of the country is in your hands. We the people watch and wait.

Please don't blame him. He is a war hero. What ever he does is for the benefit of the country

If you truly love your country you will stand with the common man against these tyrants the Rajapaksa’s Mr Army Commander. But if you have no ethics you will still remain a boot licker of the Rajapaksa’s.

Army has all the powers to take necessary action to maintain law and order in the country. The general public must know their limits. They must not behave in an insolent manner.
