An investigation would be conducted against the Department of Immigration and Emigration in connection with the incident where a Chinese national entered the country using a forged passport, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said today.

He told a news conference that the Chinese national in question will be summoned to the Ministry today and further action will be taken with consultation of the Chinese Embassy.

A Chinese passenger using a forged passport and his two friends, another Chinese and an Egyptian who attempted to enter the county at the Bandaranaike International Airport and behaved in an unruly manner when the Immigration and Emigration officers detected the forgery and prevented their entry, had been detained to be deported, but released on the instructions of the State Minister of Urban Development and Housing Arundika Fernando.

Investigations revealed that the Chinese passenger bearing a forged passport and two others had arrived from Dubai on Thursday (18) and the former produced a passport issued by the Guinean government which, the officials found was forged.

However, Minister Alles said no action would be taken against the State Minister who requested to release the passenger as the Immigration and Emigration officials must not act upon wrong instructions. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

What could the Immigration Officials do, when Politicians show their Thakkadi behaviour??? Is it the position of Honourable Minister that the flouter of the Law was not the Chinese Visitor but the culpability lies with the CULPRIT; and USURPER of the Immigration regulations but those charged with the duty of enforcement of those regulations who identified the Infringement thereof thereof??? Surprising though the Honourable Minister, who happens to be the Progeny of an Erudite, Forthright and Honourable Teacher and Cadet Master, who was my Class Teacher and English Teacher too, during my formative years in a leading College in SL would be stunned at the Logic being proclaimed by the prodigal Son!!?? Let us not become obsessive and impractical like the British. Compared to horrible things happening in Sri Lanka , a Chinaman who is a potential investor entering the country with illegal passport is NOT SERIOUS. Just a warning to him not to repeat this behaviour is enough.

If it happens to be FORGED USD that he BRINGS IN TO INVEST, then he is SIMPLY informed of his Misdemeanour and SEVERELY WARNED NOT TO REPEAT IT!!!?? So based on Mr Alles' argument rouge ministers can give illegal and orders outside their subject matter, throw their weight around and get illegal things done, and they can go scott free ( i.e. remain above the law) and those officers who acted under duress become the villains and held accountable for carrying out those orders, and not the person giving those orders.

A Minister can issue a letter but the Immigration has no right to release this said Chinese person if he was in the wrong. Its time the public servants are told to stand firm when executing their duty.

Immigration officials should work according to the rules. They should not do anything based on instructions of a minister who has nothing to do with Immigration matters. Even if the minister in charge of Immigration instructs, such instructions should be official.

So if a person is coming into Sri Lanka for investment even if he is a world renown thief the government does not care but only for investment. His fist move shows he is a theif by holding on to a forged passport and still we accept him with open arms. What a country are we.
