Former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal was today released on bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court over a private plaint filed alleging that he is responsible for the country's crippling economic crisis. Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala ordered Cabraal to be released on a surety bail of Rs.10 million.

The court further extended its order preventing former CB Governor Cabraal from leaving the country until November 24.

Meanwhile, President's Counsel Sampath Mendis appearing for the accused raised objections, challenging the maintainability of the private plaint. The Court directed both parties to file their objections on the next hearing date.

President's Counsel Maithri Gunaratne appeared for the petitioner.

The Court made this order pursuant to a request made by former Southern Province Governor Keerthi Tennakoon through a private plaint filed in terms of section 136(1)(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.

The petitioner alleged that Cabraal is responsible for the country's crippling economic crisis since he took measures to pay a US$500 million sovereign bond. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

System of preliminary objections must be dismissed and a matter must be heard on it merits to find if the accused is guilty. When the Government /AG is not doing its/his job, the citizens try to do that work and they must be allowed to proceed. These are delaying tactics

AG's actions are highly questionable. Inconsistencies based on power of the accused

Congratulations.... Victory of the people of Sri Lanka.

Prof Lasantha Pethiyagoda Wednesday, 26 October 2022 03:45 PM

Cabraal should be indicted for crimes against humanity in an international court of justice. No kangaroo courts can properly hear a case while political power rules over every institution in Sri Lanka,

Who can hire a President's Counsel to prosecute Nandalal Weerasinghe? Current CB Governor is the one should also be prosecuted for keeping the dollar peg and inflation that is financially harming for many. Inflation means rupee keeps falling, but the dollar peg is kept same rate. The gap between real value and fantasy Central Bank rate is widening daily. Central Bank staff also get provided their salary through money printing. So they in turn have vested interest which causes inflation driven by the money printing.

After committing such a huge crime, this fellow is granted bail? What kind of a judge is he? What ridiculous laws in your country?

Prof Lasantha Pethiyagoda- spot on. Exactly for the same reason you need international courts to investigate war crimes

Ajith Nivard Cabraal wrongdoing pales in comparison to what Nandalal Weerasinghe is doing now. Whole country is deceived by the Pied Piper tune of Nandalal, who with his sweet talk helping in the crisis is in reality actually sending us all into the gutter, and then he'll head away with the pension. Afterwards the rest of the citizens much much worse off. Nandalal is going doing scam to the power of 100 compared to bond scam.

He should get a life sentence for putting the entire country into poverty and starvation. Where is the one law one country policy.

Just imagine going to IMF during COVID lockdown period and then raising taxes, electricity, fuel, water charges. The aragalaya would have begun then.

Can someone explain the law to me - Why should he be bailed when he was not arrested and remanded. I saw him on TV coming to courts in his private vehicle. I am confused

Hubert Congreve Thursday, 27 October 2022 08:44 AM

Ajith Nivard Cabraal should be kept behind bars not to be released even on bail for all the damages he did for our nation.

Russel Harmmer Thursday, 27 October 2022 08:51 AM

He earned in billions looting CB and gave it to Mahinda Rajapakshe, this is the truth. Both Mahinda and him should be sent to gallows in due course.

Rev. Fr. Rex James Fernando Thursday, 27 October 2022 08:54 AM

If Cargo Boat Dispatch is still in operation, he may join a BOAT carrying illegal people fleeing the country, but then again wealth, status and who one knows and supports may eventuate in him fleeing in secret like GOTA did, watch this space!!!
