The Education Minister, Susil Premajayantha said the department would start teaching Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject in grade eight.
He said the decision was taken in line with the program to make information technology a core subject for the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) examination.
Earlier, it was planned to teach AI as a subject in grade 10. Later, following the suggestions of an expert committee, including university professors, it was decided to start teaching in grade eight.
The minister said without this kind of transformative change, just by conducting extra classes, it is not possible to produce a man/woman suitable for the 21st century. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

This minister is not a tech-savvy guy. Many years ago when election approached he talked about "nano technology". Now AI is his new hit. AI is not an easy subject to master unless one has a knowledge about computer programming. Programming is not just C, C . Java, Pascal, Cobol, Fortran etc. It is all about algorithms or architecture. Hope the clown understands this.

We don't need AI. We want elections to appoint the 'Economic Armegedon'!

A parallel effort to immediately introduce a STEM syllabus for grades 1 to 5 and mandatory post graduate refresher qualifications programme for all Maths teachers including testing their teaching skills, introducing child centered project based learning will help Sri Lanka build more research and innovation competencies that will help Artifical Intelligence efforts in the senior classes. Also an *hour of code* for middle school kids per day with Scratch to other more complex basic programing tools should be introduced.

The education minister should invite professional bodies like SLASSCOM, FITIS, CSSL to give workable proposals for K12 education next generation syllabi creation.

but don't search artificial intelligence in the government or parliament, as there is not even natural intelligence.

We have an abundance of real intelligence that’s why we allowed a minority of our people to plunder the wealth of our country and also now we give priority to feeding 330,000 Rana Virus as opposed to our malnourished and starving children. Why do we need artificial intelligence ?

Before teaching AI to grade 8 students, please pay attention to high percentage of students failing O/L mathematics.
