A group of 263 students of the Karapitiya medical faculty of the Ruhunu University were forbidden entry into the faculty for causing inconvenience to the freshers during a recent ceremony to welcome them.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena said a group of second year students of the medical faculty were forbidden entry into the medical faculty.

He said the students had arbitrarily removed the address of the Dean of the Faculty from the agenda and compelled the new students attending the ceremony to be dressed in an attire dictated by them.

The male students had been ordered to be dressed in shirt, a long pair of trousers and tie and the female students were forced to be dressed in Sari and had to have makeup done at a beauty parlour.

Prof. Amarasena said the new entrants were not in a position to bear the expenses of costumes and make up at beauty parlours as instigated by the seniors in view of the prevailing economic constraints.

He pointed out that the group of senior students concerned had violated the consensus reached between them and the university administration not to cause any inconvenience to new entrants.

The vice chancellor said a formal investigation of the incident would be held and that drastic disciplinary action would be taken against them.

He said he would not hesitate to expel them from the university if found guilty of ragging. (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)

Come on people, grow up! How long have these practices been going on? Words, words we have heard but no action apparently.

Don't suspend but expel them from the University. Ragging will come to a halt

Very good. They should be given maximum punishment. Also they should be denied free education. Let them pay a tuition fee. Because they should not be a burden to the tax payer. Then only they will value the free education.

Do not have any remorse on these senior students and they should set some examples to the next generations . Suspend all of them for one or two years . You have power and authority vested upon you and I hope that this government will support you as well. These senior students have caused death in some universities by doing this uncultured practice in our university . These are funded by the public so don't show any kindness please publish them and do not allow them into university premises for some time and let this be an a warning to all other university students. There is not way to stop this barbarism without taking some action. . How many more lives we are going to lose ? How many new students were dropped due to this inhuman culture

Very good move. This type of uncultured activities should be completely eradicated. Animal behaviour in a so called majority Buddhist country. Keep these disgusting undergraduates at least away for 12 months. No, it will not happen. Politicians will be bribed and I bet, they will be back in ten days.

Just expell them so that they can earn a living by participating in protests and destructions funded by foreign interested parties. That is all they can do. Useless idiots wasting public money.

We have some men with back bones. It is the Peratugami/JVP nexus killing our higher education.

Damn good. It's about time authorities took steps to put a stop to ragging of any nature whatsoever. Students who involve in ragging must be referred to compulsory psychiatric treatment because they are definitely mentally derailed people. Whether they can be rehabilitated or not is a different story.

Why saree and make up ? Trying to imitate CSW's on MG road in Delhi and downtown Worli in Mumbai!

All VC should be really tough on these disruptive forces. Ragging organised by the previous batch? It is shame on them. Why can't they organise beautiful talent evenings where all students recognise each other, from freshers to finalists? The main idea should be to identify, understand and groom fresh arrivals to face the challenges of higher education as a unit.

Jeppa garbage. Their leaders send their children to pvt universities while our children have to get ragged. Hypocrites

Put an end to this ragging Already! They educate themselves with the taxes paid by the privilleged and this is how humbly they treat the freshers who like themselves had to work hard to get there! It's the 21st centuary, peole have Human rights and rights to violence-free education. No one has to go through so much abuse and trauma just to get educated. Some one take this to the United Nations Human Rights council!

Good move. Evict them immediately the troubled-lot and pave the way for innocent students to obtain a decent degree in the Universities.

Those who got involved should be expelled from the university. od it so that it will be a lesson for others as well. Also these 2nd year fools should be punished for human rights violations. Also, universities should install cctv cameras where possible to prevent such things. if someone is against that, kick them out of campus too.

Medical students in SL still have difficulty getting rid of past stupid culture of "ragging" newcomers to the school instead of a warm welcome. I would suggest that once the culprits involved are identified they be employed to clean the lavatories for six months without pay at the teaching hospital as punishment.

Looks like at leat there is one Vice Chanceller (not sure yet) who has a back bone.

This bloody ragging system must be eradicated from universities. Get a legal document prepared on ragging offense and ask all university student who enter the university to sign this in front of a lawyer and a witness. The punishments of violating to agreement must me mentioned. It could be stoppage of scholarship payments, suspensions and in more serious cases, to initiate legal proceedings should be mentioned. This is not any more a joke.

Language they understand Wednesday, 12 October 2022 08:01 AM

This is a brutal custom introduced by some mentally sick students, who come with vengeance against fellow students. Years back, seniors at the Colombo Medical College forced the freshers to stand at Punchi Borella junction raising a shoe in hand. Some were made to act as Traffic cops. This is minimum ragging. Area residents, did not like the what they saw, and physically reacted. The whole crowd hooted. SENIORS RAN FOR SAFETY; FRESHERS WERE THANKFUL; END OF RAGGING. If this is the language FREE EDUCATION receivers understand, let us talk to them in that language.

Dear ANTHARE Members, the entire country is clamoring for a “Systems Change”. It is unlikely that it will happen from the top. You guys have an excellent opportunity here to start the “ Systems Chnage” from the bottom. Eliminate ragging in Universities once and for all. Lead by example. Good Luck.

Ragging culture menace should be stopped at all Universities irrespective of any type as the students and parents are distressed. This is because of free education which has brought in students who do not know values. The Universities in other countries don't promote this type of behaviour of inhuman treatment.
