Dayasiri accuses Harin of using unsuitable language

North Western Province Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera yesterday accused UNP MP Harin Fernando of using unparliamentary language during the live TV debate with him and says he did not sling mud at his opponent.

“From the beginning of the TV programme, he (Fernando) used unparliamentary language and called me names like ‘balla, buruwa, thamuse etc, and acted like a low class man, which is unbecoming of a parliamentarian,” Jayasekera said.

“I am not a person on whom one should use such language; I am doing  honourable politics. I can’t respond in the same language. I didn’t speak about anything outside politics. I only asked him to resign his Parliamentary seat if he wanted to contest the Uva Provincial Council elections. That was related to politics,” he said.

Jayasekera said, “I also asked Fernando why he (Fernando) spoke against casinos, as he visited casinos frequently. Was that not related to politics?”
Jayaskera said that when he asked a question from Fernando and he had no answer he used unparliamentary language on him instead. “It is not good for politicians to act like this in public. I apologise to the people over the incident,” he said. (Diana Udayangani)
