Walkie-Talkie system for private buses to minimize harassment

Colombo, Dec.7 (Daily Mirror) - Considering various indecent issues happening in private buses, the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) is to introduce a walkie-talkie system for passengers to make their complaints immediately.

LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne exclusively told the Daily Mirror that the new system will be introduced in a couple of weeks for the convenience of passengers.

Accordingly, all private buses will be equipped with the Global Positioning System (GPS). Then the passengers can make their complaints to the nearest police station or to the National Transport Commission (NTC) by pressing a button fixed inside the bus.

"This will help to minimize harassment, thefts, speeding, careless driving, ill-treatment by conductors and drivers, and various other illegal activities happening in buses. Passengers need to have a safe and comfortable travel experience with a free mind," Wijeratne said.

This is a good safety measure we can provide passengers with.

Wow has Gamunu fallen off his bed and knocked his head to have this epiphany , impressive that the Private Buses have decided to have GPS technology and this 'walkie talkie' service. Whilst appreciating this, kindly teach your drivers some road etiquette and how to drive. End of the day public transport is a service, all of you have a responsibility to ensure passenger safety and the safety of other road users.

This will not happen and this is another news like giving a uniform to a conductor/driver.you make a complaint on a walkie talkie.next day you will not be allowed to step into any of these buses or you can stabbed few days later.

To gain attention, this guy Gemunu creates these ludicrous jokes. Even though tickets are required, the majority of buses do not even issue them. Can anyone expect these people to install a button alerting law enforcement to their offenses in this situation? You can press until the bus arrives at its destination, but the message won't get through.

When the offender is a friend of the driver and/or conductor the walkie-talkie will go without signals. These days when 90% of the people carry mobiles this is a useless proposal. It will be useful for the person who will have the import rights to import the walkie-talkies

very soon drivers and conductors will learn to manipulate this system to get alert when someone complains and they will be threatened , expect a bus to show up at your house next and get beaten up, rather have a string merit system for drivers and conductors, but then again we are in Srilanka anything can be manipulated with money, specially bus owners

Instead of Walkie Talkie, it is better to Walk the Talk, once the complaint is lodged the Police must take immediate action. Now everyone has smart phone. The police must introduce Special SMS number for complains. Sometimes back a Passenger sent the complaint message for forged bus ticket issued on CTB Expressway and the action was taken immdiately.

First you employ drivers who are half decent and have common sense public transport drivers should act accordingly with standards required by you people guidelines give this fellows a contract reneue every six months or yearly some of this drivers got zero personality not suitable introduced minimum standards conductors among the worse majority are half intoxicated and uncivilized IRC fellows This can be monitored if people from the top employ with guidelines to protect passengers keep roads and other roads users safe get decent conductors with minimum standards it should be a proper system to employ with conditions and issue contracts due to poor macanisam today public transport drivers conductors have no respect whatsoever get half decent drivers with common sense....conductors should be given public relation (PR) training and deciplin guidelines any kind of abuse or driver safty issues must be investigated fines and cancelling of public transport liecence should be introduced
