Parliament, March 20 (Daily Mirror)- A member of 'Viyath Maga' who is now working with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa is behind the move to prevent the implementation of the Adani Group’s wind power project, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera told Parliament.

Responding to a question raised by the Leader of the Opposition, the Minister said former member of Viyath Maga Rohan Pethiyagoda is one of the persons who has come out against the proposed wind power project.

“Professor Pethiyagoda is an advisor to the Opposition Leader. He is a former member of Viyath Maga,” the Minister said.

He said Professor Pethiyagoda is one of the few who had raised an environment issue pertaining to the wind power project.

“We have taken steps to remove six turbines which belong to wind power plants which are already existing in Mannar. We will also keep a 2 km corridor for bird migration,” the Minister said.

Referring to the proposed unit price of power, the Minister said the matter is under negotiation at the moment.

“We have not made the final decision on the matter," he said.

It was also highlighted that the opinion of the residents have been sought with regard to the proposed project.

Our people oppose each and every electricity generation project but then demand lower electricity prices. Do they want to generate electricity out of thin air?

    Nimal Wednesday, 20 March 2024 11:59 AM

Viyath Maga? No, it was Vipath Maga brining untold suffering to the masses.

SP and his cronies will object for each and every thing. That had been and continues to be their sole contribution towards "developing the country".

We will also keep a 2 km corridor for bird migration, Is he talking with sense? Though advance man made technology have starlight navigational system birds dose not have such technology. First get proper environmental impact study and find suitable technology not commission impact only.

Birds should be provided with Google maps to find their way safely.

    Jehan Wednesday, 20 March 2024 06:37 PM

Environmental study is already done an approved. Do you want approval from Sajith?

    Jayampathi Wednesday, 20 March 2024 12:25 PM

Were the residents of the area consulted. I would like to hear from the residents whether it was a properly structured consultation or just a few consulted.

Sri Lanka wants to be like Singapore where meritocracy prevails. However our professionals who thought they were real Viyathas got their Knickers (and Jocks) in a real twist and messed the whole nation. Sad state of affairs. We tax payers pay good taxes and send the best 40,000 to free universities and then they join the government services and screw us all up by been stupid from policy level downwards. However In this case Minister you better listen to Prof Pethiyagoda and take corrective action. Birds and unit prices are both concerns to us citizens.

Anyone who seeks support of this doomed Viyath Maga for their political purposes will meet the same fate of Gota

Mihira de Alwis Wednesday, 20 March 2024 11:53 PM

I do not believe Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda was a member of Viyath Maga. He has been quite vocal about environmental issues for many years.

    Gamini Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:00 PM

These Viyath Maga clowns even opposed the LRT project.

    Dee Wednesday, 20 March 2024 02:10 PM

Vipath Maga messed up this country!

These are single issue academics who has no concern for neither the context nor economics. Obtaining a PhD means nothing in the real world. They should keep strictly to academics. There always are impacts from what we do. Driving cars are also bad for the environment. Birds die so do people. Everything changes. The fact is most politicians have no clue as to how to to find the compromise. Even Buddha preached about the middle path. If some person claims that he or she knows all about the area of study in which the person obtained the PhD in, either the person is being dishonest or requires more study. So is the person who believes in the PhD laureate. Once we had a 'double doctor' politician and a finance minister, who had no clue as how to manage the SL economy! We are here because of these failures.

Why all this messup since you know the person just offer him 10 percent of the commission you are making and he will back down

Birds are naturally gifted creatures with knowledge to survive in the wild. They will find their own alternate navigation path

This project will not be beneficial to Sri Lanka in the longer term. Every year we will pay millions in USD fir this renewable energy project. Adonis will recover investment within couple of years. He us not going to pay us for the wind that is blowing above our land. It is very unfortunate that our own people have betrayed our nation . It is really really unfortunate.

Moh Sleiman Thursday, 21 March 2024 04:48 AM

This is nothing new to the PEOPLE of SRI LANKA being unfortunate,We elect these uneducated BARBARIANS to screw our country,So one Last time lets bring in Anura K.D.The only person who will Revive the country.

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 21 March 2024 06:09 PM

    AKD will be another Gota.

    Ravana Thursday, 21 March 2024 06:45 AM

Yes, our country needs electricity but we need to stay away clear from bird migration paths. Mattala airport was done in a similar manner. Whatever we do should be ethical. We're already killing elephants at an alarming rate, why kill off the birds too? Kalpitiya is littered with wind turbines, most are at stand still.
