UNP raises concerns over President’s remark at Maha Viru Samaruma

Colombo, Nov. 15 (Daily Mirror) - The United National Party (UNP) has raised concerns over a remark made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the 36th Il Maha Viru Samaruma, claiming that a key comment was deliberately excluded from the official record of the event.

According to the UNP, the President’s statement that “a crown did not fall on our head by drifting down a drain” was delivered during his speech at the commemoration but was not included in the official press release titled “Remarks by Comrade Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the 36th Il Maha Viru Samaruma.”

The party alleges that this omission was intentional.

The UNP further questioned whether the President’s comment signalled an intention to revive governance concepts associated with the pre-1972 constitutional framework, including the notion of “oath-wearing rulers” that was abolished under the First Republican Constitution.

The party also emphasised that President Dissanayake took an oath to uphold the sovereignty of the people, noting that Sri Lanka’s Second Republican Constitution was established on principles affirmed through a referendum, reinforcing the supremacy of popular sovereignty.
