Sri Lanka appears to be turning down calls for an an internationally monitored investigation into Easter Sunday bombings since it rapped yesterday the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for trying to use incorrect and unsubstantiated information from biased sources in analysis in this regard.

Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN Geneva Himalee Arunatilaka made remarks to the UNHRC in this regard in reference to the written update. She briefed the steps, already taken and to be taken, by Sri Lanka to investigate the incidents through its mechanisms.

“It is regrettable that the OHCHR has sought to use incorrect and unsubstantiated information from biased sources in their analysis. As Sri Lanka has repeatedly informed this Council, extensive and comprehensive investigations have been carried out by the government with regard to these attacks including a Presidential Commission of Inquiry, the report of which was submitted to Parliament.

Resolutions 60/251 and 48/141 require that the work of this Council and the OHCHR should be guided by the principles of universality, impartiality, objectivity and non-selectivity, and constructive international dialogue and cooperation.Unfortunately, this does not appear to be the case with regard to Sri Lanka,” she said .

She said,” Investigations carried out by the Government authorities were assisted by international professional agencies including the Australian Federal Police, the FBI of the United States and INTERPOL.

As at April 2023, 79 have been indicted in the Easter Sunday terror attacks related matters. On 12 January 2023, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka delivered its judgement on the Fundamental Rights petition that was filed against the President, IGP, Director of State Intelligence Service, Defence Secretary and Chief of National Intelligence, at the time of these attacks. In addition, the Government has decided to establish a Parliamentary Select Committee to address concerns raised in the public domain as of late and the President has appointed a committee, led by a retired Supreme Court judge to investigate the relevant allegations,” she said.

Sri Lanka also reiterated that it supports the One China policy .

“We welcome China’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms. We reiterate that interference in the internal affairs of any sovereign country cannot and should not be tolerated,” she said. (Kelum Bandara)

Don't ask for international probes. Instead ask for international technology assistance, forensic labs, advanced forensic training for detectives etc and perhaps an international consultant to guide the local teams on additional data analysis and overseas collaboration etc. If we outsource our HR issues, Police Issues, Security issues and all that to international teams, this country will be a bigger geo political mess than what it is already

Well coordinated strategy, who is funding the people working in the back office, such as creating story lines, video footages, audio clips, doctored photos, etc.

Nobody should expect the Sri Lankan Government to agree to an International Probe to the Easter Attack for obvious reasons. Those who were behind the Easter Attack are part of the present Government and mainly from one family. That family put Ranil Wickremesinghe in the position of President and their political party continues to put RW in power.

Hon. Maithripala Srisena, former President, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa Cardinal Malcom Ranjith Fernando, all the victims of Easter Sunday attacks, many opposition parties and the civil society insist for an international probe and none has accepted responsibility; hence an international probe is the need of the hour.

Kamal Sirimane Thursday, 14 September 2023 01:08 PM

Hi-Siri, withdraw your money from Swiss Bank and settle your dues with Easter Sunday victims' families.

Anything that implicates the govt. is biased and doctored and unsubstantiated It was the same with May 2009 and now with Easter bomb

We don’t apply the priciples of universality, impartiality, objectivity and non-selectivity, and constructive internal policies within our country but we are advising international bodies to do the same. What has the one China policy got to do with UNHCR ? Was she and our country pandering to the Chinese.

For years, stubborn nations have reacted with similar fairy tale excuses as per the standard template when confronted by logic, reasoning and evidence. All it needs is someone who can shuffle together some words and paraphrases to write up a meaningless 5 minute reading and read at the rostrum. As for 'non interference of internal affairs, we had PolPot's Cambodia, Vorster's S.A., and Idi Amin's Uganda before the present day Barbaric junta of Mianmar and Thailand. All because of this non interference in internal affairs.
