Colombo, March 04 (Daily Mirror) -  The skyrocketing prices of coconuts will have a serious effect on the packed rice and curry meals in the future, as most of the curries are prepared with the coconut cream, food industry trade unions said.

All Island Canteen Owners Association President Rukshan Harshana told the media yesterday the usual price of a coconut, which was at Rs.60 to 80, has increased to almost double. A coconut is currently sold between Rs.120 to 150.

He said the canteen and eatery owners are faced with a serious situation to prepare the rice and curry meal packets under the increased coconut prices, thus in uncertainty of having to sell meal packs for a very high rate.

The unexpected price hike of coconuts comes at a moment when everything else including rice, chicken, eggs and gas has significantly gone up.

Harshana warned that the prices of coconut oil will also go up in the coming days owing to the sudden hike of coconuts.

Every year in February March we have this problem. The government must have a massive nation wide drive to plant at least 1 million new coconut trees and about 3million Jack trees which will even help feed the elephants.

Try and get a coconut planting material from the government farms. None will be available. I had an interesting experience two years ago, Coconut Development board promised me 100 planting material from their farm in Jaffna. I arranged the transport and contacted them, their answer was the minister of coconut development had taken all the material for his friends farm in Vadamarachi and none will be available for me. Of course they offered some good for nothing planting material from their farm in Palai which after one year had to be replanted. This is the sodid story of SL, elect wisely your leaders.

Colombo consumers always paid 100 to 130 rupees per coconut, the out station population would have paid 60 to 80 rupees, increasing food prices is very unreasonable, my advice is to all boil little rice make a salad, polsambolaya or a dhall curry and enjoy rice, this will compel hoteliers to reduce the price of bath packet. What curries you get in a bath packet, manioc, pumpkin or some other cheap vegetable.

Coconut, coconut oil, vegeyables what evwr you name it prices are going up even by 50 cts or 1 Rs.1/- every few days .A reasonable cry from the canteen association. When you go to a canteen still 100% cheaper than outside.

Prices are only the symptom what is the cause and where is the planning.Going by what one reader has said above there is always a shortage in Feb March if so where is the planning. We must be having more than one ministry either directly or indirectly responsible for such matters.Coconuts take several years to grow can't do these things overnight like importing a car. Where is the planning? Very soon we will be importing nuts from India? our favourite country for imports these days if they have any for export or maybe we could hand over all our lands for a foreign co to grow more nuts hope that is not the case and we will have a sensible approach to growing our food the CRI must have plenty of ideas

Disease is rampant amoung coconut farms. Neither the CRI or the coconut development board gives a hoot. Even basic Rhino beetle Pheromone or Red Palm Weevil is not available in the market. These products are produced in India and freely available there. Why cant the minister make an agreement with the producers in India and make them available for us? Simple we have many brain dead, not fit for position people occupying the powers of corridors. They only know one thing, tax and kill the industry!

Everything has increased in price, why not coconut? The farmers incur costs that have doubled and also the pests and disease destroy nearly 75% of the crop. This is the reality of a coconut farmer like me. We only run coconut farms for the love of it and considerable investment we have put in. It takes us at least Rs 20,000 to bring a coconut tree to maturity and in some instance we see 0 return on this investment.
