Religious and aesthetic subjects to remain unchanged: Minister

Colombo, September 20 (Daily Mirror) - Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya today assured that the current government has no intention of reducing religious education or aesthetic subjects in schools.

The Minister made this remark during a discussion held at the Education Ministry, following inquiries by members of the Buddha Sasana Task Force regarding the contents of the Buddhism textbook under the new syllabus.

Responding to concerns, the Director of the Religion and Values Branch explained that under the education reforms scheduled for implementation in 2026, all children will first be introduced to a basic understanding of all religions through the opening lesson of the Grade 6 module, after which students will continue their studies in their own respective religions.

Attention was also drawn to the shortage of Buddhism teachers in schools. Minister Amarasuriya said steps are underway to address the issue, noting that information on teachers is being collected from all provinces, after which teacher deployment will be balanced through a formal recruitment and assignment plan.
