Colombo, Jan 8 (Daily Mirror) - Discussions are underway to issue the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) at the Divisional Secretariat level to solve the issues that the public comes up with when registering, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

Addressing the media at an event held at the Presidential Media Division today, he said that many issues are arising when registering for the TIN.

However, the Finance Ministry is preparing to start the implementation of the TIN on February 1.

The Ministry hopes to carry out the registrations through the online system.

Issues have been raised as this has become a fresh experience for the people. Therefore, it has been decided to solve the issues at the Divisional Secretariat level.

"Out of a million individuals eligible to pay income tax in this country, only 500,000 are not fulfilling their tax obligations. It is imperative to ensure that these 500,000 individuals, who have neglected their tax responsibilities, are brought into the tax system," the Minister said.

"A tax-payer is a strong citizen who has achieved stability in a country, which is well recognized in developed countries. It is important for the people to make such a change in attitude for the development of the country. Therefore, everyone's contribution is expected to make this programme a success," he said.

First the government should understand what should be the taxable income considering the cost of living. Presently the people are in a level of malnutrition an starvation. Then come the pensioners. They live on bank interest if not on pensions. Medication is soo expensive they could hardly make ends meet. Find ways to reduce unemployment and bringing down the COL before taxing people. Also stop unwanted government expenditure. Eg maintaining ex president's. Billions could be saved. The thamshas and perks the 225 plus 1 has. Government spending on foriegn travel. President travels for every conference or summit in the world. A massive group has a free travel with him. If you have witnessed recently, all the ex ministers who was critical of the present president are in these tours. The taxes to be paid by the government pet billionere Businessman to be collected. The bank loans written off for there henchmen. Then the money robbed from the country. TIN is fine, rethink on tax levels.

Country has a very poor public service. The government is creating unwanted hardships for the citizens of this country, by introducing unethical methods. This is not the way to bring in tax defaulters. Employers will declare payee tax, businessman could be identified through local authorities and others in simmilar professional ways.
