A proposal has been made by the Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry to allocate three acres outside the Kurundi archaeological site for the purpose of building a Buddhist temple, a Hindu Kovil and for public use.

The proposal was made by the Secretary to the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs during the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Religious Affairs and Co-Existence which was held under the Chairmanship of Upul Mahendra Rajapaksha recently.

The Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry has made several proposals to address issues pertaining to the Kurundi archaeological site.

The Ministry Secretary said Kurundi Rajamaha Viharaya has been identified as a Buddhist Religious place and that it belongs to all Sri Lankans.

The Director General of the Archaeological Department said 229 acres have been gazetted as the area belongs to the Kurundi archaeological site and that an expert team is preparing to conduct examinations to reaffirm the gazetted area.

The DG said the reinvestigation of the site would be carried out within six months.(Ajith Siriwardana)

Allocating land for religious places is good as we badly need spiritual help. The issue is the way the successive governments distributed land amongst their supporters, for cultivation and or residence. The result will be in the near future there will be no land available. Government must be restrained in the distribution of land and must plan high rise housing projects for the needy like in Singapore

A Buddhist temple, a Hindu temple, then why not a Christian Church ?

The Archeological department is creating unnecessary involvement in creating communal disturbances. They need to leave it for the local people to decide. Wasting 229 acres of farming land to allocate for religious purposes is not a wise idea since the country’s farming productivity is already negative and depends on imports from other countries

Is that 3 acres bare land or under cultivation ,I don't think as a Hindu we don't need grand scale kovil ,by tradition they do poojas or pongal from "locala"

Any minded person first should think of agriculture.

Kurundi Vihara archeological site should remain an archeological site - a heritage of Sri Lanka not belonging to any religion and should never be rebuilt or allowed to hold any religious events there. Allocating another location is not an issue.
