Colombo, Dec. 1 (Daily Mirror) - Strict legal action will be taken against individuals who irresponsibly circulate false or unethical information at a time when the nation is united in responding to the ongoing disaster, police said.
Speaking at a media briefing held today (01) at the Defence Headquarters, Police spokesman ASP F. U. Wootler said that the Criminal Investigation Department has already received several complaints regarding the spread of misinformation that causes fear and panic among the public. He added that the Computer Crime Investigation Division has begun investigations into these complaints.
He said that while the government is working with full commitment to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential services and supplies in the post-disaster period, some individuals continue to circulate unverified and misleading information on social media. Issuing or sharing statements that trigger public fear is a serious offence, and the dissemination of false information is punishable by law, he stressed.
The Police urged the public to refrain from circulating false or unethical content during this challenging time, emphasizing the need for national unity.
He further stated that certain crimes have been reported from disaster-affected areas, including temporary shelters. The police will strictly enforce the law against anyone involved in offences such as rape, unlawful entry, theft, robbery, or any other crime under the Penal Code. He added that the government expects the cooperation of all citizens to support the national response operations being carried out for the welfare of affected communities.
The Spokesman said that the Police Department has also implemented several urgent measures to ensure the safety of foreign nationals currently in the country.
